ALL TOO SOON

Back to reality tomorrow with a bang.
After 18 days off it’s back to work but I’ve just had a look at my rota for the next two weeks and only just realised I’m going to be doing 7 x 12.5 hour shifts in the next 9 days!! 87.5 hours total and virtually all of it on my feet.
On the up side, I get 6 days off at the end of it….. if I survive.

There’s no more alcohol in the house and won’t be for a while.
I had my last milky coffee this morning. I’m going cold turkey tomorrow so watch out!!
I will be denying myself savoury snacks and going healthy.
When I’m not doing rediculous hours at work I will be starting my walking again.
My aim is to lose 2 – 3 stone (28 – 42 pounds) by Xmas.

I know that sounds like a lot but the last time I did this I managed to lose 3 stone in 3 months. So doing the same over the next 4 months is doable.
I’ve just got to stay focussed and not give in this time.
I want to be able to wear a nice dress to my brother’s wedding in August next year and I am seriously considering getting a cosplay costume tailored for me but I need to be a little slimmer first.

It’s going to be a bit of a wrench over the next week not being able to spend as much time on my PC.
I’m going to miss Tumblr and I’m really going to miss AO3. I just won’t have time to read a lot of fan-fiction for a while. I’ll just keep my eyes open for any updates on the pieces I’ve already started and that will be it.

I’ve watched 16 films over the last couple of weeks.
I actually only got to the cinema 4 times which is a little disappointing.

We saw ‘Star Trek Beyond’ which was good. I don’t think It quite had the flair of ‘Into Darkness’ but I still enjoyed it and the Spock/McCoy interaction was brilliant!

Star Trek beyond

We saw ‘Jason Bourne’ which was also good but that’s just it, it was your typical Jason Bourne outing and nothing special.

jason bourne

Then we saw ‘Suicide Squad’ twice!
We went to a 2d midnight showing on 4th August and then we went to an IMAX presentation on our anniversary on the 6th August.
I loved it. My Husband loved it. The kids loved it but apparantly the critics hate it!

Harley Quinn 2

Other films I watched via Bluray or streaming services like Netflix and Prime included…..

‘The Rocky Horror Picture Show’. This was a must watch after I took two of my girls to see the stage show early in my annual leave.

Rocky Horror 4

‘True Grit’. The 2010 re-make with Jeff Bridges.
It’s good but doesn’t quite get the feel of the original. My hidden agenda for watching it was an early performance by Domhnall Gleeson who played ‘Moon (The Kid)’. Scared whitless and panicking. Something Domhnall does very well.

true grit

‘We Need to Talk About Kevin’.
A film I’ve been meaning to watch for a while and just a little disturbing.
Starring Tilda Swinton and Ezra Miller.

We need to talk about Kevin

IMDB states ‘Kevin’s mother struggles to love her strange child, despite the increasingly vicious things he says and does as he grows up. But Kevin is just getting started, and his final act will be beyond anything anyone imagined’

Kevin is the personification of evil literally from birth but he’s only like it around his mother and no-one else believes her. Very creepy.

and then ‘Star Trek Into Darkness’. Just because……

Star Trek Into Darkness International Trailer

‘Batman v Superman’. Released onto Bluray it would’ve been rude not to.

batman v superman

‘Non-Stop’ because I wanted to snuggle and watch something with the husband so I picked something a bit manly and not containing any of my current obsessions. Then the hubby fell asleep and left me to it anyway. Sod!

Non-Stop

‘The Revenant’. Sod Leonardo DiCaprio, I watch this for Captain Henry played by Domhnall Gleeson!

revenant 3

‘Midnight Special’!!! Yay. Finally out on Bluray and the ONLY Adam Driver film I’ve watched in weeks (shock horror!!)

midnight special

‘Eddie the Eagle’ also just released onto DVD and one of the best films of the year so far.

Eddie the Eagle

An then there are 4 films I watched because of another current obsession.
My fan-fiction. Both reading and writing has got me a little hooked on gay male relationships.
I started with going back to a film I haven’t watched in years, ‘Brokeback Mountain’
Jake Gyllenhaal and Heath Ledger. What more needs to be said?

brokeback

Then I discovered a wonderful film called ‘A Single Man’
As I said in a previous post (HERE)

A Single Man 1

Starring Colin Firth, Matthew Goode, Nicholas Hoult and Julianne Moore, it tells the story of an English Professor (Firth) in the 1960’s. One year after the sudden death of his boyfriend of 16 years (Goode)
It is set during one single day as he is obviously preparing himself for suicide as he struggles to cope and the events throughout the day that bring memories and realisations to the ultimate and achingly heartbreaking conclusion.
It’s a beautiful film.

Then I watched a film on Netflix called ‘Holding the Man’
IMDB states ‘Tim and John fell in love while teenagers at their all-boys’ high school. John was captain of the football team, Tim an aspiring actor playing a minor part in Romeo and Juliet. Their romance endured for 15 years to laugh in the face of everything life threw at it – the separations, the discriminations, the temptations, the jealousies and the losses – until the only problem that love can’t solve, tried to destroy them.
Based on Timothy Conigrave’s cult-classic and hilarious memoir, and the inspiration for the award winning stage play, HOLDING THE MAN is the remarkable true-life love story that speaks across generations, sexualities and cultures’.

holding the Man

I ended up LOVING this film.
My only issue was that the 30 something year old actors playing John and Tim, also played John and Tim as high school students and that looked and felt a little strange but once you get past that, this story is amazing and had me blubbering at the end.

And then I found ‘4th Man Out’ on Netflix.

4th man out

About Adam, a car mechanic in a small, working class town who comes out of the closet to his unsuspecting, blue-collar best friends. The results are touching, hilarious and endearing and I’ve watched it twice already! It’s just a lovely gentle comedy.

On top of all those films I’ve also managed to write 2 pieces of fan fiction.
The pair of them totalling around 9000 words.
I’ve really surprised myself at how much I’ve been enjoying the writing.

Apart from the usual housework and gardening in between all that, that’s it!!
Today I have to do a tidy and clean from top to bottom this afternoon and then I think I will have an early night to try and charge my batteries for the next 9 days slog.
You never know, I may get to squeeze in another film.

THE BEAUTY OF ANNUAL LEAVE

I had a long lay in this morning after getting in at nearly 3am because of a midnight showing of Suicide Squad.

It was AMAZING!!
I can see why the critics don’t like it.
This was made by a fan, for the fans.
I seriously hope it does well, especially for Joel’s sake. He really deserves to be a leading man!

So! We have decided to take a trip down to Stevenage tomorrow and watch it in IMAX!!
It’s our 22nd anniversary tomorrow (how scary is that) and we can go for dinner at one of the restaurants in the vacinity when it’s finished.

My annual leave is now dwindling fast. Back to work on Wednesday.
I still have tomorrow to look forward to and on Monday I get a new Adam Driver film to add to my collection as Midnight Special is released on Bluray along with the wonderful Eddie the Eagle!!

I haven’t got very far with my two new Star Wars novels though.
I’ve been too preocupied with all the fabulous Kylux fanfiction that has completely captivated me and I can’t get enough of!!
Believe it or not, I’ve even written 2 more pieces of my own during my annual leave.
One very fluffy hurt/comfort piece called ‘Angel on my Shoulder‘ and one…. well… one quite pornographic piece if I’m being honest called ‘Dead of Night
I never knew I had it in me!!

I have found writing to be quite cathartic and I’m seriously thinking about trying to write something original once I’ve got my mind out of the Kylux Trashcan!

We’ll see.

EEEEP!

7 hours.
There’s only another 7 hours to go before I FINALLY get to see Suicide Squad.
Whatever posessed me to get midnight tickets I’ll never know.
I’m getting a little bit excited now.

I have decided to drag myself away from my computer for the next hour or so.
We are desperately in need of some groceries if we are to eat over the weekend and I have become a little obsessed (yes even more so) about some fictions over the last few days and seriously neglected things.

I have felt a little like a troglodyte locked into my own little world at my desk reading an amazing series of fics, ‘Not About Angels‘ by  MellytheHun
3 parts, 43 chapters so far and as with all good fics, I stumbled onto it by accident but once I started reading I couldn’t stop!!

Now I am agonisingly waiting for an update to continue reading and find out how it’s going to end because right now my heart has been completely ripped out!!

Then I go an find that one of my favourite fic authors has started another Alpha/Omega story. Undoubtedly my favourite stories and yet another story I have to wait for an update on!!
Trapped by Solohux

That’s it.
I need to stop delving into all this amazing fiction until everything I am currently reading has been updated and completed!!
I think I now have about 5 or 6 stories on the go and waiting for them to get updates is agonizing!!

Right, time to actually get some work done………. but I might just nseek a look onto AO3 first….. you know….. get something bookmarked for later!!

CAN WE JUST…….?

Can we just take a moment to truly marvel at how gloriously handsome Joel Kinnaman looked at the world premier of Suicide Squad last night in New York!!

813

815

839

He absolutely rocked that suit.
Can’t wait for midnight Thursday!!! Suicide Squad is going to be awesome!

THE GANG’S ALL HERE

So I’ve actually had a request!

This is new to me and actually quite flattering.
The request came from a fellow Joel Kinnaman fan who has been enjoying reading my blog and wants me to write about Suicide Squad.
This is something I’m more than happy to do as I haven’t blogged about Joel for some time. He tends to be quite elusive between projects but as we are now within spitting distance of the release of Suicide Squad we are beginning to see him and the rest of the gang doing the rounds of press gatherings and red carpets.

So, where to begin?

I’ve always stated in past blogs about movies based on comic books that …. I don’t read comics! I never have.
I’ve picked them up ocassionally to have a look but I just don’t like reading them and I find the way characters are drawn just makes them totally ridiculous.
However……
I love comic book characters and what they can do and what they stand for and for me, those characters work better when they are taken out of the comic books and put onto film.

Over the last few years I have thoroughly enjoyed the escalation of the Marvel Universe.
Captain America, Thor, Avengers, X-Men, Guardians of the Galaxy, I could go on forever naming everything that’s been done or is planned and with the exception of the recent Fantastic Four shambles, every single one of them has been amazing!
But……
Deep down I enjoy the darker side of comic movie heroes.
2000AD’s Dredd…. NOT the Stallone one but the Karl Urban one!! was amazing. Shame it had the shittiest marketing campaign in history that single handedly killed the possibility of a franchise.
Christian Bale’s DC Batman trilogy……..

OMG! Just got totally distracted by the post arriving and my copy of Star Wars: The Force Awakens has arrived 2 days before its UK release date!!  That’s my day sorted then!

Anyway…..

Christian Bale’s DC Batman trilogy was, for me, the defining Batman.
I was a little dubious about Ben Affleck taking on the role but I needen’t have worried. His older and more world weary Batman is amazing and I can’t wait to see him in Suicide Squad.
Don’t get me started about Superman!!
As much as I loved growing up with the Christopher Reeve Superman and was happy with the Brandon Routh attempt at keeping the feel of Christopher’s Superman alive, I am so much happier that they’ve taken the re-boot of the franchise in a darker direction.

OK, so the next few months sees the release of more Marvel goodies with Captain America: Civil War and X-Men: Apocalypse but it’s DC’s release of Suicide Squad on August 5th that I’m really looking forward to.

IMDB states simply: A secret government agency recruits imprisoned supervillains to execute dangerous black ops missions in exchange for clemency.

Basically they unleash supervillains to control suppervillains!!
But, one character is thrown in to keep things under control.
Rick Flagg.
And Rick Flagg is being played by another one of my obsessions, Joel Kinnaman.

When I first found out about this I needed to find out just ‘who’ Rick Flagg was and came across another blog site, Moviecomicswhoswho.wordpress.com, who gave a detailed description as follows…..

Rick Flag is, essentially, a man of honor, a soldier born who follows the footsteps of his legendary father and who tries his best to keep the name up. Flag is extremely selfless, always ready to sacrifice himself for his teammates or for the cause they’re fighting for, but this virtuous behavior often becomes some sort of self-destructive tendency that ruined also his private life. As the on-field leader of the Suicide Squad, he’s an extremely charismatic commander, able to gain the respect of some of the most fearful and dangerous psychopaths in the world; he’s also one of the best living pilots, and an extremely well-trained armed and unarmed combatant, able to fight to a standstill even martial artists like Batman; he’s also a fine strategist and a keen investigator, able to accomplish nearly any kind of mission, from assaults to intelligence. Rick Flag is extremely loyal to his country, but he’s even more loyal to his men: he will obey any order, even the ones he doesn’t agree upon, except for the ones going against his own team.

Rick Flagg 4

And like I’ve also stated in the past, I seriously hope this film is a success.
I would love to see Joel Kinnaman stand toe to toe with Batman in a future movie!

The film’s ultimate villain is The Joker being played by Jared Leto.

Jared Leto Joker

This man has some big shoes to fill!
Everyone will be comparing him to Heath Ledger’s portrayal in The Dark Knight.
From the photos I’ve seen and from the snippets in the trailers and from his crazy antics on set, I’d say he’s going to be batshit crazy and looks like he’s doing an amazing job.

I can’t mention Joker without mentioning Harley Quinn.
The two tend to go hand in hand after all, as the Joker ‘created’ Harley Quinn.

Harley Quinn
This makes Suicide Squad more interesting as The Joker is the bad guy of the movie and Harley Quinn is on the team sent out to stop him!

But we can’t forget the rest of the team.
As Rick Flag states in Trailer number one, while flicking through some photos with June Moone/Enchantress…

Deadshot – Guy who shoots people…..

Deadshot

He’s a Crocodile and he eats people…..

Killer Croc

Burns people……

El Diablo

You’re possessed by a witch…..

enchantress

and she’s just crazy!….

Harley Quinn 2

He doesn’t even mention Captain Boomerang and Katana!

Captain Boomerang Katana

So, as you can see it’s an absolutely crazy team going after an absolutely crazy villain.
I’m so excited to see how Rick Flagg keeps them in their place!

This gentle giant of a man….

Joel Smiles

Playing Rick Flagg. A man who is able to gain the respect of some of the most fearful and dangerous psychopaths in the world, one of the best living pilots, and an extremely well-trained armed and unarmed combatant, able to fight to a standstill even against martial artists like Batman.

And let’s not forget.. Batman is in this movie too!!

Ben 7
For now, that’s all I can really say.
As I’m not a comic fan, I don’t know the ins and outs of all the characters but I look forward to finding out about them in the movie.

And now I’m afraid my excitement for what just came through the front door is getting the better of me.
I’ve got a few chores to do before I can sit down and go through all the Star Wars extras!!

BATMAN VS SUPERMAN

I’m going to give this review a spoiler alert.
I don’t go into great detail about things but if you haven’t seen it yet be warned.

I will admit that when I first found out about this film I was disappointed.

I was disappointed that Henry wasn’t getting a chance to individually build on his Superman with another standalone Superman movie.
I was disappointed in the choice of actor to play Batman.
Even though I’m a Ben Affleck fan, I just didn’t see him as Batman material.
I was disappointed about the introduction of Wonder Woman.
I’ve never been a Wonder Woman fan.
I was even more disappointed in the choice of actor to play Lex Luthor.
I’m not a Jesse Eisenberg fan.

However, the more I found out about it and after seeing the trailers, I was seriously warming to the idea of this film.
I made the mistake of reading a few press reviews after it premiered and this made me start to doubt the film all over again, so when I went to see it in the IMAX today I was a little apprehensive.

I needn’t have worried!
I LOVED IT!!

I’m still loving the fact that Lois is the only one who knows who Clark Kent really is and that they are now in a full blown relationship.
Henry is looking better than ever as Superman and is still coming to terms with his reveal to the world and how they are perceiving him.
He’s still doubting that he’s done the right thing.

BVS 1

What can I say about Ben Affleck.
OMG!
He was perfect.
Seriously one of the best takes on Batman yet.
Take Christian Bale’s Batman, put 10 – 15 years on him and you have Ben Affleck’s Batman.
Mean, moody, psychotic and angry.
He is also looking incredibly good and very fit!

BVS 2

Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman was surprisingly good and my interest has now piqued for the Wonder Woman movie.
She was elegant as Diana Prince and Kick Ass as Wonder Woman.
I just hope they steer clear of the insanely tacky invisible jet and I hope she can carry a movie on her own.

BVS 3

I had no idea the film was just short of 3 hours long and it needed to be.
This is a set up film for a lot of future DC movies. Wonder Woman(2017), Flash(2018), Aqua Man(2018), Cyborg(2020), Justice League(2017+2019) and Suicide Squad(August this year) are all springboarding from this movie.

That said, apart from Wonder Woman featuring quite heavily and helping to save the day, the other characters only get a small introduction via computer files found by Bruce Wayne and then shown to Diana Prince.
The discussion at the end of the movie about finding them and bringing them together is a complete set up for the Justice League movies.

Ben Affleck can be seen again as Batman later this year when he appears in Suicide Squad and he has got a lot of hard work ahead of him to stay in shape as he has signed up for Justice League parts 1 and 2 and so has Henry Cavill and Gal Gadot.

Now, Jesse Eisenberg.
Mmmm, I think he was the only real disappointment for me.
I found him just a bit too manic and crazy.

BVS 4

I always picture him as more controlled, still batshit crazy but controlled.
Jesse didn’t quite cut the mustard for me, not to say that he spoiled the film, far from it.
The rest of the film was so good, I can forgive this one little indiscretion.

I can also forgive the abundant use of CGI.
It worked.
It worked where the Star Wars prequels failed.

Overall, Batman vs Superman was a brilliant addition to the DC collection.
It took it’s time to tell the story and was careful not to overshadow Batman and Superman with future characters.
Even Wonder Woman was well placed and not over powering.
She worked well with Bruce Wayne and will be a great team mate or even partner to Bruce Wayne in the Justice League movies.

I may just have to go and see it again.

Right, now bring on the Suicide Squad!!

Suicide Squad 8

CAN’T DENY IT

I can’t deny it, I’m getting a little bit excited.
Batman vs Superman is less than a week away from release.
Due to work and gaming comittments on Ian’s part, we are having to wait until the 27th to see it.
However….
We have chosen to see it in IMAX!! and we are taking Marjorie with us. She is going to freak!
This is going to be amazing in IMAX.
Henry Cavill has competition because Ben Affleck is looking exceedingly hot!

We are inching closer and closer to some of the biggest films of the year.
I have finally got Star Wars episode 7 out of my system although the Bluray is ordered and will be arriving on my doorstep on 18th April so I may do some more gushing over that one on yet another viewing.

To ease the pain of the incredibly long wait for Episode 8, we have some other pretty big franchises to keep us entertained.

This year alone, Marvel and DC are battling it out for supremacy.
DC are finally getting into the swing of things with the aforementioned Batman vs Superman but they are also introducing us to the Suicide Squad.
This is probably my most anticipated film this year and I sooo want it to do well.

Marvel is still one step ahead with continuations in the Captain America Franchise with Captain America: Civil War.
I have been talked into a movie marathon by Marjorie.
She is a huge Captain America fan so we are going to see re-runs of Captain America: The First Avenger and Captain America: The Winter Soldier followed by a midnight sceening of Captain America: Civil War!!
I haven’t done a movie Marathon since 1991 when I went to see the first 6 Star Trek movies.
Anyway, if this trailer is anything to go by, it will be worth it.

Then the following month we have X-Men Apocalypse.
Really looking forward to this one and can’t wait to see Oscar Isaac in something completely different for him as he is playing Apocalypse. Takes a minute to realise it’s him under all that makeup and costume.

Marvel are also introducing us to a new character this year, Dr Strange.
He’s being played by Benedict Cumberbatch but there is no trailer yet.

Doctor Strange

I think that’s it for DC and Marvel this year. I’m sure someone will correct me if I’m wrong.

Another Franchise that’s back this year is Star Trek.
I am a long time fan of Star Trek and I absolutely love the previous 2 re-boot movies.
I know there are a lot of die hard fans out there that will disagree with me but I think JJ Abrams did a fabulous job of breathing life back into the franchise.
I can’t wait for Star Trek Beyond.

And of course the end of the year sees another Star Wars Franchise movie.
NOT THE ONE I WANT… but one to tide us over until next year.
Star Wars Rogue One is the first of the stand alone Star Wars movies and tells the story of how the plans for the original Death Star were retrieved before Episode 4: A New Hope.
There is no official trailer release yet (so forget what it says in the title) but this appears to be a teaser that was shown at a convention and hand filmed so the quality isn’t great.

Anyway, these are some of the ‘stand out’ films I can’t wait to see this year.
I’m sure there are many more in between but I could be here all day.
It’s going to be a good year for movies.

FAVOURITES THROUGHOUT THE YEARS

It will come as no suprise to many that one of my favourite characters on TV at the moment is ‘Adam Sackler’ from HBO’s Girls and played by Adam Driver.
Not a show to watch if you are easily offended!

Take a look at this little mashup from Youtube.
It shows the evolution of Adam from season 1 through to season 5.
Notice the lovely thick black hair in the last clip. He went from filming this to filming for Star Wars episode VIII so I would say that Kylo still has his glorious locks for ep VIII.

Anyway, seeing this clip got me thinking about favourites old and new which has given me my little project for the day.

I don’t watch as much TV as I used to, I tend to stick to films as there is more of an immediate gratification in the end of a movie.
You know the outcome in around 2 hours without having it dragged out over 13 or 24 weeks with a hiatus in the middle!!!

Except of course for Star Wars that likes to drag a story over a 3 film arc and makes us salivate for the slightest hint of what’s in store for our favourite character….. but I’m not bitter about that one at all!!!!

Angry Kylo

………. anyway! Let’s see.
Another show that I have been keeping up with over the last few weeks is ‘Lucifer’
It’s another cop/buddy show with a bit of a twist in that the buddy happens to be the Devil who’s taking a vacation from his usual job, much to the chagrin of God.

The British actor, Tom Ellis, has taken on the role and with his looks, his charm and his verbal diarrhoea, he does a brilliant job!

Joel Kinnaman is another current favourite but he likes to keep us waiting between projects!!
Suicide Squad is his next movie which I’m hoping will do big things for his career.

695

He has, however, broken his current drought season with his appearance on Season 4 of House of Cards.

696

I’m really looking forward to seeing his character do battle with the Underwoods in Season 5 and August 5th cannot come quick enough for Suicide Squad.

Right, time to get the brain in gear and think of favourite characters of the past.
I was still very young in the 70’s but I remember catching re-runs of Star Trek on BBC2 in the early evenings.
Chips was another favourite from a Saturday afternoon and Starsky and Hutch was one to stay up late for and watch with Mum!
So some of my earliest favourite characters were…. Spock (Leonard Nimoy), Poncherello (Eric Estrada) and Hutch (David Soul)

70's

There are two honorable mentions from the 70’s
After the success of Star Wars at the cinema, two TV shows jumped on the band wagon.
Battlestar Galactica and Buck Rogers in the 25th Century.

70's x 2

Starbuck and Apollo made a fantastic team and Captain Buck Rogers was a cutie.
Battlestar Galactica has since had a wonderful re-boot although for some reason, Starbuck wasn’t quite as attractive to me! Apollo on the other hand………

Starbuck and Apollo

We are sadly still waiting for someone to re-boot Buck Rogers!!
It’s a shame because it would be fantastic with today’s special effects.

Then along came the 80’s and by now I had my own TV. A little black and white portable 14 inch!
It was easier for me to watch what I wanted as I was not restricted to watching what my parents were watching.

The 80’s were…. not exactly something to be proud of!
The fashion was dubious, the acting was…… dubious….. the special effects were cheap!
All that said, it had some of the most iconic TV shows ever!

The ‘A’ Team, Airwolf, The Fall Guy, ‘V’, Simon and Simon, Miami Vice, Knight Rider, Magnum, Automan, TJ Hooker, Street Hawk and just making it in the tail end of the 80’s was Quantum Leap.

Some of my favourite characters from the 80’s were.
Face – The ‘A’ Team (Dirk Benedict), Stringfellow Hawke – Airwolf (Jan Michael Vincent), AJ Simon – Simon and Simon (Jameson Parker)

80 x 1

Crockett – Miami Vice (Don Johnson), Automan – Automan (Chuck Wagner), Vince Romano – TJ Hooker (Adrian Zmed)

80 x 2

Mike Donovan – V (Marc Singer), Thomas Magnum – Magnum (Tom Selleck), Sam Beckett – Quantum Leap (Scott Bakula)

80 x 3

Then at the tail end of the 80’s something magical happened.
They re-booted Star Trek!!
Star Trek the Next Generation made it to our screens and my early earning days were spent at coventions and collector fairs.

Star Trek Next Gen

My first real TV crush/obsession was Commander William Riker (Jonathan Frakes)

Riker

The 90’s were just filled with amazing shows and science fiction/fantasy seemed to be the order of the day. This was music to my ears!!
All the more reason to attend conventions and collector shows!

The first incarnation of The Flash, X-Files, Friends, Xena-Warrior Princess, E.R., Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel, Stargate SG1, Earth Final Conflict, Babylon 5, Charmed, Farscape, Highlander, Hornblower, J.A.G., The Pretender, Space Above and Beyond.
These are just the ones I can remember right now, I’m sure there were loads more!
All of these shows spawned some little crush or slight obsession.

David Duchovny in the X-Files was just lovely, David Boreanaz as Angel/Angelus in Buffy the Vampire Slayer was simply amazing but Angelus was always more intriguing.

90's 1

Robert Leeshock in Earth Final Conflict was attention grabbing (and bottom grabbing, but that’s another story entirely!!), Michael O,Hare in Babylon 5 was a mature lovely and Michael T Weiss as the pretender was just brilliant.

90's 2

Highlander spawned not 1, but 2 obsessions. Adrian Paul and Peter Wingfield.
So obsessed was I at the time that I actually ran the UK side of the Peter Wingfield fan club for a while, until work and family became too much, so I had to give it up, but not before I had the chance to interview him for the club magazine and organise a group meeting with him at a convention down in Felixtowe.

90's 3

Hornblower, J.A.G. and Space Above and Beyond also have major mentions from this decade. J.A.G ended up running for 10 years after a bit of a rocky start but unfortunately Space: Above and Beyond was a bit ahead of it’s time and got cancelled after it’s first season. Had it come just a few years later, it may have been a different story.

90's 4

Now we reach the naughties and TV watching kind of went a little silly.
We still had some cracking shows but I didn’t watch them quite so religiously. There were just too many to keep up with.
I think that around this time they also got a little more sophisticated. Audiences expected more from their viewing.
Heroes, John Doe, CSI, CSI Miami, CSI New York, NCIS, Prison Break, Stargate Atlantis, Smallville, 24, The Killing, Lost, Rome, House, The Tudors, True Blood, Psych, Grey’s Anatomy, Bones, Firefly, Chuck, Jericho.

Heroes was a show that took off like a rocket. It had so much potential but after getting caught in the middle of a writer’s strike, it lost it’s momentum and never really recovered.
John Doe was a fantastic show about a man with no memory of who he is but he has the knowledge of the world stashed in his head. This show ended after just one season and frustratingly ended on a whopping cliff hanger!!! The star of the show went on to star in Prison Break.

00's 1

Historical dramas like Rome and The Tudors where a ‘must see’.
The Tudors in particular was memorable because of the casting of Jonathan Rhys Meyers and the future Superman, Henry Cavill.

00's 2

Smallville brought us the teenage years of Clark Kent and ran for 10 years and went on to spawn current favourites, Green Arrow and The Flash. Firefly brought us the crew of Serenity. An amazing show that stunned it’s audience after it was cancelled after it’s first season. The troops rallied and although they didn’t get a series continuation, they did get a movie to tie up all the loose ends.

00's 4.jpg

Speaking of shows kicking fans into a frenzy, Jericho was one such show.
It told the story of a nuclear attack on the US and the survivors and residents of a small town called Jericho.

00's 3

When this show got cancelled after it’s first season the fans got organised and started a campaign that eventually lead to a second season to tie up the loose ends.
The campaign was fenomenal!!
As stated in a past blog….

In the finale to the season when asked for the towns surrender Skeet Ulrich simply replies. ‘Nuts!’
So when the show was cancelled some bright spark on the Jericho forum came up with the slogan ‘nuts to CBS’ for cancelling the show.
Outrage on the forum turned into a letter writing campaign that suddenly turned into a bombardment of CBS at their New York and LA offices……but not with letters!
No no no, the fans were a little more creative and started sending peanuts.
They got organized and started pooling their money on a site called http://www.nutsonline.com/jericho
This company started sending truck loads of peanuts to CBS on a daily basis along with letters of support for the show.

We’re not just talking a few bags of fan mail here, we’re talking serious amounts of ‘Nuts to CBS’
To date they have had a grand total of over 20 tons delivered…..yes you did read that right.

20 TONS!!!!!
The one day record stands at 10,000 pounds that hit CBS on the 29th May.
The campaign was swift and decisive and successful.

This blog is becoming incredibly long and could keep on going but I think it’s time to start wrapping things up.

So, we are now in a world where special effects allow us to do anything and as an audience we have come to expect our special effects to be good but we also expect good story telling.
So occasional romps into fantasy are interspersed with cerebral shows that make you think.
Arrow and Flash as opposed to The Killing and House of Cards.

00's 5

00's 6

There are of course, so many more than have been mentioned here.
I can hear some of you now….”what about Vampire Diaries?, what abour Enterprise?, what about Eureka?”…etc.
I could quite literally keep writing and searching for pictures all night but I think this gives a good idea of the kind of shows I grew up with and the kind of things I like to watch currently!!
It’s a bit eclectic but that’s me and right now anything that takes my mind off of Star Wars is very welcome.
Seriously!! My mind is mush thinking about all the possibilities for the next movie and as you can see from my countdown clock at the top right of this blog, we have a gut wrenching 21 months to go!!
