Tag: Midnight Special

I finally got to see Midnight Special last night.
There was a lot of expectation and excitement on my part as this was the first film I’ve seen in the cinema with Adam Driver in since falling in love with him in Force Awakens.

Anyway, I was not disappointed.
It’s a nicely paced drama with a little sci-fi thrown in for good measure.
However, don’t let the sci-fi part put you off seeing it if that’s not your thing

Adam’s part was not huge but integral to the story and as expected he was brilliant. He even gets a couple of the lighter moments that lift the film out of the depths of the depressing.
The ending is bitter sweet and not the happy ending you would normally expect which just adds to the films charm.

My husband is usually pretty good at figuring out plots early in a movie, annoyingly so, but even he said that he didn’t have a clue how this film would play out.

It’s not a blockbuster but it makes you think and sometimes that’s just what you need in a movie.

Roll on Paterson and Silence. 2 more of Adam’s movies also due out this year.

I had such a good laugh last night.
I can’t remember the last time I had a good, uncontrollable laughing session like that.
I was sitting in the living room with all three of my girls.
Ian had given up and gone to bed and we were left just generally having a chat and the conversation turned into a ‘let’s see how we can make someone giggle’ session.
It got a little bit naughty at times and certain things had to be explained to the youngest which just added to the hilarity but looking back on it, I’m glad I’m actually able to talk to my girls so openly!
I hate to think what it sounded like from upstairs. Ian must have thought we were going crazy!

Anyway, I’m now sat here contemplating cutting the grass in the back garden but there is a rather large and nasty looking grey raincloud working it’s way overhead so I’m holding off to see what it does.
Looks like a 50/50 chance of rain.

I’ve been sat here with my cup of milky coffee this morning, doing the usual scan of FB and Tumblr and as I expected, it’s gone a little crazy over a certain teaser trailer that was released yesterday.
We finally got to see an officially released teaser for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story due out this Xmas.
A little snack to tide us over until Episode VIII during Xmas 2017.
Well, I say “a little snack” but this looks like a full three course meal with an extra pudding for luck!

It looks absolutely amazing and gives me great hope that everything ‘Star Wars’ due over the next few years will all be of the same high standard as Force Awakens and we will not be dealing with the mindnumbing quagmires that Eps 1, 2 and 3 were.
Don’t get me wrong, 1, 2 and 3 were OK. I just found them to be very pretentious, quite dull in places and trying WAY to hard when it came to the CGI special effects. The look and feel  didn’t flow too well into 4, 5 and 6, whereas Force Awakens flowed naturally, looked stunning and was more in keeping with 4, 5 and 6.

Anyway, back on to today.
Looks like I may have been lucky (if you can call it lucky). The sky appears to be clearing and I don’t think there’s been any rain so I might just have to get off my backside and cut the grass afterall.

I’m not complaining, I’ve got to do something to take my mind off of my cinema trip tonight.
I’m going to see ‘Midnight Special’ with Adam Driver, Michael Shannon, Joel Edgerton and Kirsten Dunst.
It’s the first time I’ve seen Adam on the big screen since Force Awakens and I’m really looking forward to it. The film looks pretty good.

So there we are. My day in a nutshell.
No doubt I will pop a quick reveiw of Midnight Special on here later tonight, it would be rude not to!

Yep, I’m definately seeing some blue sky peeking through, better take my chance with the grass while I still can.

Today is a bit of a mixed bag of emotions.

It’s been just over 6 weeks since I sustained a knee injury that saw me taking almost threee weeks off work followed by reduced hours at work and then some annual leave.
In the last 6 weeks I have only done one full 12.5 hour shift!

During my time off, I’ve spent loads of time with the kids and indulging in my hobby, movies.
I can’t deny it, it’s been lovely and I wish I was in the financial position to keep doing it.
Unfortunately, I’m not and tomorrow sees me returning to work full time, but I also can’t deny that I’m looking forward that.
My next shift isn’t until Tuesday so I do get three days to recover from the shock!

It’s going to be interesting to see how my knee is over the next couple of weeks.
I started physio exercises this week and going back to work full time is really going to be testing it.

I will also be throwing myself into a diet from tomorrow.
The fun is over.
Not only do I have a family wedding in September, I also have a family wedding in Italy either in May or July next year.
So I have plenty of motivation to lose wome weight.

Anyway, today I am taking Dharma to the children’s physio to get a re-fresh on her knee exercises as she too injured her right knee just a couple of days after I injured mine!
Then later this afternoon we are taking the kids out to dinner as one last treat.

Getting back to work will hopefully help me to stop obsessing Adam Driver, Star Wars, Kylo Ren and racking my brains reading through theory after theory of what could happen in Episode VIII.
Seriously, my brain is mush.

Good news is that next week I get some fresh material to drool over with the release of Adam’s new movie, Midnight Special. Also starring Michael Shannon.

The week after that we get the release of Star Wars: The Force Awakens on Bluray with loads of extras.
There have been previews of what’s to come and my tumblr colleagues have once again done themselves proud and Gif’d it all to the enth degree so that computer illiterates like me can enjoy it all time and time again.

We can look forward to Adam behind the scenes with JJ Abrams.

And of course, one of the things I am looking forward to the most are the deleted scenes.
One scene in particular as far as I’m concerned and that is Kylo Ren on board the Millenium Falcon.

So, as you can see I actually need work to take my mind off things.
Once I’ve seen the bluray and studied every second of it, I can get back to normality.

There’s another Star Wars movie this Xmas!!

Day 7 of forced rest and relaxation.
What to do? What to do?
All this time on my hands to do what I love the most.
Scour the internet, watch movies and…. oh yes!! all the time I need to obsess.
All this time on my hands has been the perfect oportunity to catch up on all things ‘Adam Driver’.

Adam Driver 10

Back on December 26th, just 7 days after seeing Star Wars: The Force Awakens for the 1st time, I made Adam Driver my ‘Dish of the Week’ #64.
By the time I wrote that blog I had actually seen the film 3 times.

I can tell you almost to the minute, exactly when I fell in love with Adam Driver.
December 19th, and as the moment happens at about 1 hour and 25 minutes into the film, it would have been about 14:25 in the afternoon. How sad is that.
Here is the infamous scene.

At the time of writing this blog I have seen the film 9 times!
I have also seen more of Adam’s work prior to Star Wars and found out a little more about the man himself.
The more I find out or see, the more I crave to find more.

And there’s the magic word.
Crave = to desire intensely, to long for, to need urgently.

It’s true!! I just can’t get enough of the man.
He makes me smile. I love his acting style.
When I see his work prior to Star Wars, I see that being the Star Wars ‘villain’ is quite a new direction for him. I can’t wait to see how his story plays out across the next two movies.

I don’t think I can justify seeing it again in the cinema but I also don’t think I can wait for the Bluray, which I’m hoping, if rumours are true, will be around April time.

In the meantime HBO’s Girls season five started airing on Sunday so I am going to be drip fed Adam driver playing ‘Adam Sackler’ on a weekly basis for the next 10 – 12 weeks!

Next month sees the cinematic release of ‘Midnight Special’
Adam’s first movie release since Star Wars and it looks good.

He has two other movies in post production, Silence and Paterson.
Both are due at some point this year but as yet, there are no trailers for either which is a little frustrating.

So! I’ll just have to make do with re-running Girls on Prime and my quickly aquired DVD/Bluray collection.
I amazingly managed to pick up 5 of Adam’s back catalogue in HMV in their 5 for £30 deal.
I was a very happy bunny!

I can honestly say that next to Star Wars, This is where I leave You  has to be my favourite Adam movie so far.

This movie is one of those gentle, heart warming and funny movies that you can just keep going back to.
The fact that Adam’s character is charming, childish and adorable just makes it even more special.

Anyway, enough about his acting.
How about a little about the man?

Like I said previously, he’s 32 and 6’2.5″
After 9/11 he enlisted as a Marine.
After serving in Afghanistan for 2 years, he had to be medically discharged after shattering his sternum in a mountain biking accident.

After a year of hard work at the University of Indianapolis, he got accepted into Juilliard.
He started TV work in 2009 and worked consistently with occasional roles on TV shows, shorts and TV movies and also worked on Broadway before landing his role on HBO’s Girls in 2012.
Since then, he has become ‘one to watch’.
‘Hungry Hearts’ is probably the film that has ‘showcased’ his talent the most so far.

He has very unconventional looks.
I have found from my internet searches that he’s a bit like Marmite.
People either love him or hate him!
The people who love him, quite literally worship the ground he walks on.
The people who hate him can be a bit mean.

He’s said it himself…..
“I’m like a sight gag, I have this really big face…I don’t totally get it. I mean, when I read for Girls (2012) I was, like, the script says ‘Handsome Carpenter,’ so someone else is going to get the part. They’ll have someone handsome, not me. I mean, I’m not in any danger of getting leading-man parts.

Well I’m sorry to disappoint you Adam, but you’re wrong.
You’re tall, you’re well built, you have an incredible main of thick black hair, you have a beautiful voice.
OK, you have big ears and a long nose but it all comes together to create an awkward, yet endearing and loveable man who seriously needs to have more confidence in himself.

Adam is married.
In 2013 he married actress and best friend Joanne Tucker.

They have been together for years and she knew him before his ‘Girls’ fame and together they set up ‘Arts in the Armed Forces’

As their website says….

To honor, educate, inspire and entertain all active duty and veteran members of the United States Armed Forces and their families by engaging them in the power and social service of the performing arts.

Take a look at some of the work they do here…..

I think he truly is ‘one to watch’
I will certainly be keeping up with everything he does from now on.
I’m happy to declare Adam Driver as Dish of the Week number 66.
This makes it his second appearance on my Dish list but I’m sure there will be more.
Probably around the releases of the next two Star Wars episodes…… Oh who am I kidding…. probably around the release of all his future films!!!
