ACTOR OF THE DECADE

On January 9th, the Hollywood Critics Association Awards took place and Adam Driver was awarded ‘Actor of the Decade!’
They have just released this lovely little montage of work, and it struck me when I finished watching it that there isn’t a single piece of work in it that I haven’t seen, in fact, I own every one of the films used!

If I were forced to pick a favourite, I don’t think I could!! It would all depend on my mood at the time.

One of my go to feel good movies is ‘This is where I leave you’
If I’m looking to be emotionally moved, it has to be ‘Marriage Story’
If I’m looking for simple or thought provoking, it’s ‘Patterson’ or ‘Blackkklansman’
If I want a laugh, it’s ‘Logan Lucky’
The film I find myself going back to more than anything is ‘Hungry Hearts’

I haven’t even mentioned ‘What If’ ‘Midnight Special’ or ‘Silence’…. I could go on.

Anyway, this award is on top of the 31 wins, and counting so far, for ‘Marriage Story’ this awards season!!

The two big ones are coming up in the BAFTAs, for which he has already got a nomination for best actor and the Oscars, which will be announced on Monday.

His competition at the moment is Joaquin Phoenix.
They have both racked up between 40 and 50 nominations each this season for ‘Marriage Story’ and ‘Joker’.

Crucially, Adam has actually won a staggering 31 so far and Joaquin has only won 7.

BUT…

Joaquin took the first of the big ones with the Golden Globe.
So it literally is anyone’s game at the BAFTAs and (hopefully) the Oscars.

LET’S TRY THIS AGAIN

Absolutely gutted that Adam didn’t get the Golden Globe this year.
Pipped to the trophy by Joaquin Phoenix, which I can understand after seeing the Joker, but to be honest, I thought Adam’s performance in Marriage Story was superior. Unfortunately, I can’t say that without sounding a bit biased.

Anyway, onto the next big one, the BAFTA’s, and Marriage Story has picked up another 6 nominations.

As I suspected, Adam has got a nomination for leading actor, and yes, so has Joaquin Phoenix, but I’m hoping that the BAFTA’s and the Oscars will be a little kinder to Adam.
Marriage Story is the kind of film that is more to their taste. Super heroes and villains rarely get a look in and when it comes to the Oscars, The Joker has already seen an Oscar in the past with Heath Ledger.
Could he make history by claiming two Oscars for two different actors? I’m hoping not but I suspect he will.

Scarlett Johansson has picked up a nomination for Leading Actress but I suspect this title will be dominated at both the BAFTA’s and the Oscars by Renee Zellweger for her performance in Judy.
I haven’t seen Judy. I’m not a huge fan of Renee Zellweger and when I saw the trailer for the film, her performance made my skin crawl, so I haven’t been able to bring myself to watch it. I have had plenty of people tell me that she’s actually really good so I will have to see it at some point, I’m just not in any hurry.

Laura Dern has picked up another nomination for Supporting Actress.

Noah Baumbach, who also directed Marriage Story has picked up a nomination for Original Screenplay.

Douglas Aibel and Francine Maisler have picked up a nomination for their Casting of Marriage Story and I think this is a well deserved nomination. The whole cast for this film are amazing and really work together well.

Finally, John Williams, the GOD of film music, has picked up a nomination for Original Score.
He has never actually won a BAFTA for a particular score, but he has been awarded the Anthony Asquith Award for Film Music at the BAFTA’s.
It would be nice to see him actually pick one up for Star Wars.
He won an Oscar back in 1978 for his original Star Wars score which has become iconic and he has worked on every single Star Wars movie since. I really hope he picks up a nomination and actually wins for his score in the final film, we’ll just have to wait and see!

Speaking of John Williams…. did you catch his cameo role in Rise of Skywalker?. A very brief appearance as a bartender, blink and you’ll miss him!

So, racking up the nominations and wins for both Adam and Joaquin, it’s a close run thing on the nominations with Adam totalling 48 and Joaquin totalling 41

BUT

When it comes to the wins, Adam has picked up a staggering 27 wins, while Joaquin has only won 6. He keeps getting pipped to the post by Adam.
So the BAFTA’s and the Oscars have become a little bit of a competition, and it would seem that Adam and Joaquin have built a bit of a camaraderie about it all.

Nominations for the Oscars are next week. Stay posted.

JEALOUS? ME? OF COURSE I’M JEALOUS!!!

So today is a day off.
I’m pretty shattered after a very mixed weekend at work.
I’m looking forward to next weekend though as my shifts have fallen really great for the next two weeks.
I’m working Tues, Thurs, Fri this week and Weds, Fri, Sat next week, so I have an extra long weekend this weekend!
Can’t wait.

So, what to do today?
I don’t really have the energy for much to be honest.
I’ll have to do some prep work on my last two college units so I can get cracking on them but other than that, I’ll be doing a quick run to Tesco to have a look at the DVD releases for the day and to get dinner and then I’ll just be pottering around the house doing some cleaning.
I plan to have all that finished by mid afternoon so I can sit down with my feet up recharging the batteries for work tomorrow.

Anyway, I’ve just spent an hour having a flick through all the Comic-con reports and videos that have been springing up this week.
Comic-con is one place we’ll NEVER get to go to.
Even if we do have the finances, Ian is in no shape to be queuing through the night for a seat in Hall ‘H’ and he certainly is in no shape to be sitting in those chairs in Hall ‘H’ for hours on end. He’d be crippled after day 1!!
So, I’ll just have to make do with on-line videos and transcripts and photos.
Am I jealous?!!

Yes, of course I’m bloody jealous!!!!

Anyway, I managed to get my first glimpse of some Suicide Squad material.
From the looks of it, I was pretty lucky to get that!
The trailer that was specifically made to be shown at Comic-con and nowhere else, was leaked onto the internet.
It’s being pulled back again quite quickly!
The copy I saw was watchable and gave me a good idea of what we are in for and may I just say…… Jared Leto is literally going to rock as the Joker!!!

Looks like we already have a catch phrase.
‘I’m not going to kill you. I’m just gonna hurt you, really….. really…. baaad!!’

Anyway, this site’s video was still playable this morning so if you want to take a look just follow the link and click on the player.
You’ll have to sit through an obligatory advert first but you won’t be disappointed!!

This film is not due for release until August NEXT year so we’ll be lucky to see any ‘officially’ release material until January.

So now I know how this film is going to feel.
It’s going to be a lot darker than Marvel and I wouldn’t expect anything less!!

Marvel is all good vs evil but DC as anyone will tell you, has the best villains so it’s going to be bad vs evil!!
And Joel Kinnaman is going to be trying to keep them all under control!!

I do just have to mention a little story I just read about Ben Afleck at Comic-con.
Obviously he was there to promote the new Batman vs Superman movie and he told the story of a surprise meeting with Christian Bale.
He stated…

“Before we started the movie I was getting my kid a Halloween costume. My son is really into Batman,” Affleck explained.

“We went to a costume store in Los Angeles… it was pretty empty. And I was in the aisle and I heard this ‘Oi!’, and I turned around, and it’s Christian Bale!

“And there he and I were, standing in the Batman section.”

“I said, ‘Do you have any tips?’,” Affleck recalled. “‘And he said: ‘Make sure you can piss in that suit.'”

Bale was also in the costume shop to buy his son a Batman suit, Affleck added: “He doesn’t just hang out [in the Batman aisle”.

I have to admit that made me chuckle. I would love to have been a fly on the wall in that store!

So, now I’ve had my fix for the day, I suppose I’d better get some work done!
