DISH OF THE WEEK #79 – MARVEL AND THE AVENGERS

So here’s what I do with an unexpected weekend off.

This is going to be a first.
I like to do the occasional Dish of the Week but I also do the occasional (very occasional) Dishette of the Week.
I have decided to incorporate the two because it doesn’t matter if the dish in question happens to be male or female. Why should I separate? In fact I think it makes me a little lazy in that I rarely write a Dishette of the Week.
So now I will have no excuse.

I have chosen to do a whole host of Dishes for this one.
As this week sees the finale to the Marvel Avengers movies as we currently know them with the release of Avengers: Endgame, I am listing ALL the Dishes involved from day one!

This is going to be quite a long post and heavy on pictures!
I have probably missed out a few because there are so many.

So! Going through the films in CHRONOLOGICAL order, so please don’t start telling me that they are out of order.
I know.
I’m running with storylines and where they all fall together chronologically.
So I will start with….

1 – Captain America: The First Avenger (2011)

This film introduced us to Chris Evans and Sebastian Stan and I can’t believe that neither of them have ever made it to my Dish of the Week!!
An oversight that is now rectified.

Steve Rogers and Bucky Barnes
AKA Captain America and the soon to be Winter Soldier.

I mean, just look at these noodles! Who couldn’t love them.

2 – Iron Man (2008)

Technically the first of this Marvel franchise and an introduction to Robert Downey Jr as Tony Stark, the Iron Man himself.
Robert has made it to my Dish of the Week in the past, at number 42, and that can be read HERE.

I said it back then and I’ll say it again, Robert was born to play Tony Stark!!

Iron Man also introduces us to the first of my Dishettes. Gwyneth Paltrow plays Pepper Potts. Tony’s Right hand and eventual lover. The only woman who can truly control him! This woman takes no shit! She also dons the Iron Man suit occasionally.

3 – The Incredible Hulk (2008)

A stand alone Hulk movie made before the introduction of Mark Ruffalo as Bruce Banner, this one starring Edward Norton.
However, my dish is going to have to be Mark Ruffalo. He is such a sweetie and I can’t understand why they are yet to make a Hulk movie with his portrayal of the Hulk. The character has been developed so much during the last 22 Marvel films that he could quite easily carry a stand alone movie.

4 – Iron Man 2 (2010)

5 – Thor (2011)

Not one, but two Dishes and a Dishette in this one. Both Dishes have had previous entries on my Dish of the Week. Chris Hemsworth’s entry can be read HERE, and Tom Hiddleston’s can be read HERE. Both blogs apparently very short and sweet.

Chris Hemsworth plays the God Thor and Tom Hiddleston plays his brother Loki in this Marvel franchise.
Chris is just perfect as the tall muscular God Thor, but Tom has been the surprise hit of the franchise with his amazing portrayal of Loki.
It’s funny to think that Tom actually originally auditioned for the part of Thor. I’m so glad he didn’t get it, Loki is just delicious!
Natalie Portman, the next of my Dishettes, plays Jane Foster, the scientist who discovers and falls in love with Thor.

If you needed any convincing about just how good, and popular, Tom Hiddleston is as Loki, then just look at this video of Tom when he attended the San Diego Comic con back in 2013 in full costume and character and watch how he plays with the audience.

6 – Avengers: Assemble (2012)

Now we’re getting serious.
I’ve already mentioned a lot of this cast already with Robert Downey Jr, Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Hemsworth and Tom Hiddleston, but this film now throws us Jeremy Renner as Clint Barton/Hawkeye and Scarlett Johansson as Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow.

AND BEFORE YOU SAY ANYTHING……

Black widow was actually introduced to us back with Iron Man 2

and Hawkeye was fleetingly introduced to us during Thor.

It was clear from day one that Scarlett Johansson was going to be absolutely kick ass as Black Widow and Hawkeye became a firm favourite with fans, although his character has been somewhat held back a little, but it is widely believed that this character will come to full fruition during Avengers Endgame.

7 – Iron Man 3 (2013)

8 – Thor: Darkworld (2013)

9 – Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014)

This filmed turned Sebastian Stan into the Winter Soldier and an absolute, rip roaring hotty!!

10 – Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol 1 (2014)

The surprise hit of 2014 was Guardians of the Galaxy, and for me, this one delivered a Dish, 2 Dishettes and a special mention as he is not an Avenger.

When Chris Pratt danced into the opening scenes to Come and Get Your Love by Redbone, he danced into the hearts of millions all over the world.
He also had two kick ass women to work with, with Zoe Saldana as Gamora and Karen Gillan as Nebula.

Chris Pratt has actually made it to my Dish of the Week twice before. One can be read HERE, and the other can be read HERE.

My special mention goes to Lee Pace, who played Ronan, the bad guy and definitely not an Avenger. Lee has already made it to my Dish of the Weeks previously, and that can be read HERE.
I have liked Lee Pace since way before this film as I mentioned in my blog. Underneath all the Ronan makeup is a very handsome man.

11 – Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol 2 (2017)

12 – Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015)

They just keep coming.
This film throws us Elizabeth Olsen as Wanda Maximoff / Scarlet Witch and (if only too briefly) Aaron Taylor Johnson as Pietro Maximoff / Quicksilver.

It also gives us Vision, played by Paul Bettany. Paul had been the voice of Tony Stark’s computer, Jarvis, since day one, but he finally gets physical form in the form of Vision in this Avengers movie and he falls in love with Wanda. I’ve always loved Paul Bettany, but he didn’t strike me as a hero type until I saw him as Vision!

13 – Ant Man (2015)

Another surprise hit for Marvel was Ant Man with the title character being played by the ever cute Paul Rudd. A joker both on-screen and off. Just how is he 50 years old!!

This film also introduces us to Hope Van Dyne, who later becomes the Wasp, played by the gorgeous Evangeline Lilly.

14 – Captain America: Civil War (2016)

15 – Spiderman: Homecoming (2017)

I couldn’t wait to get to this one!
After years of various re-boots of the Spiderman franchise, they’ve finally hit the nail on the head with Tom Holland as Peter Parker.

The baby of the MCU at just 22 years old. Sweet, innocent, cute, blabber mouth. Cannot be trusted to keep plot-lines a secret so doesn’t get given whole scripts to read. He literally has no idea what he’s filming until he sees it on-screen!

This Youtube video perfectly demonstrates Tom’s inability to keep a secret and the lengths his co-stars go to to help him keep quiet!

But I think this video is where I truly lost my heart to Tom Holland. What a mover and a little hottie. This young man is going to go a long way and he’s going to mature nicely doing it.

16 – Doctor Strange (2016)

When this one was announced, I was very unsure of what to expect. Seeing the stills and the trailer before the film itself, I really didn’t know if I was going to like Doctor Strange. Turns out, I loved it! But then why wouldn’t I?
Benedict Cumberbatch doesn’t put a foot wrong. I’ve loved this guy for years anyway, and now I have more of a reason to love him.
He has also been on my Dish of the Week list in the past and that can be read HERE.

17 – Thor: Ragnarok (2017)

Chris Hemsworth went from hot to banging hot for this one!

Ragnarok also introduces us to another kick ass lady, Tessa Thompson as Valkyrie.

I’m also putting another special mention in here with Karl Urban.
I have loved Karl since seeing him portray Judge Dredd back in 2012.
In this he plays Skurge the executioner who turns out to be quite the hero.
He has made it to my Dish of the Week posts about 5 or 6 times in the past, and a couple of them can be read HERE, and HERE.

18 – Black Panther (2018)

Right! We’re on the home straight now.
Black Panther was a huge hit for the MCU…..but….. and please don’t hate me for saying it, but this one is probably my least favourite of all the films listed here today.
I just didn’t enjoy it. I felt they were trying to do just a bit too much with it and it really bugged me.
That said, it did give us plenty of eye candy and kick ass women with Chadwick Boseman as T’Challa/Black panther, Letitia Wright as Shuri and Danai Gurira as Okoye to name just a few.

19 – Avengers: Infinity War (2018)

20 – Ant Man and the Wasp (2018)

21 – Captain Marvel (2019)

OK, so chronologically, she should be second, but hey ho! The first female avenger to get her own movie.
Brie Larsen as Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel, showed us that women can truly be kick ass and do it in a costume that is not over sexualised.

22 – Avengers: Endgame (2019)

So here we are. The culmination of the last 21 films.
The bringing together of the WHOLE of the MCU…. literally.
Without giving anything away, the film is amazing. Totally NOT what I was expecting. It certainly didn’t go in the direction I thought it would. It was funny, it was sad, it was exciting and it was a fitting end to the MCU as we currently know it.
It is certainly NOT the end of the MCU.

More hotties will be posted as we find out about them.
I have no doubt that Tom Holland will get a post all of his own at some point.

CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR

I’ve tried not to be spoilery so it’s up to you if you want to carry on reading.

So, I went to a Captain America movie marathon last night.
I handled it better than I thought I would. I didn’t fall asleep!!
It was good to see the first two on the big screen again and a nice re-cap before the main event at midnight.
Civil War.

Civil War 1

My reaction?

WOW…. Just WOW!!

So, what do I say without giving anything away!!

First of all, the film is bloody brilliant. Just what you’d expect from a Marvel movie.
Comic book fans are literally going to wet themselves.
All those multiple superhero fights that are beautifully illustrated in various comics come to life extremely effectively.

There may be a lot of characters to contend with but they are all given respectable screen time and jobs to do.

The new Spiderman is going to be brilliant!!
He was given more screen time than I thought he’d get and we really get a good feel for how the re-boot is going to be. I think it’s another one to get excited about.

Ant Man was great and had some of the funniest lines in the movie.
He also had one of the biggest surprises!

Black Panther was done extremely well and will be playing a big part in future Avenger movies.
I’m having a little trouble seeing him in a stand alone movie but then again, I’m not a comic book fan and know absolutely nothing about him….. yet!
If his appearance in Civil War is anything to go by, it’s going to be another Marvel winner.

As for the rest of the team…… still looking good.
There’s right and wrong on both sides of the argument throughout the film and poor Bucky just can’t seem to win!!
I did however, see a lovely little bromance brewing between Bucky and Sam! I hope they continue with this in future movies. They were hilarious together.

All in all, if you’re a Captain America/Marvel fan you won’t be disappointed.
I did come out of it feeling like it should have been called Avengers: Civil War but other than that it was amazing!
It kept me awake until gone 2am so it must have been good!!

LITTLE BIT EXCITED

So, Captain America: Civil War is released tomorrow here in the UK and I have been talked into a Captain America Marathon this evening by Marjorie.

Captain America

So tonight, at 18:30 we will be trying to get as comfortable as possible in the cinema to watch Captain America: The First Avenger followed by Captain America: The Winter Soldier and then finishing off with a midnight showing of Captain America: Civil War!!

I’m a little bit excited but I’m also a little worried that I may not actually make it all the way through Captain America: Civil War.
My days of staying up past three in the morning disappeared about 18 years ago with the arrival of the first of the kids!!
I haven’t done a movie marathon (at a cinema) since 1991 when we went to see the first 6 Star Trek movies.

I decided to take a couple of days annual leave so that I didn’t have to worry about recovery for work.
I don’t think it would have looked very good if I collapsed on an empty bed for forty winks.

So the plan for today is that I got up with the kids at 7am.
I’m going to do a little housework and then I’m going to chill/nap for the afternoon and fully charge my batteries.
I went to Tesco last night to stock up on Drinks and food for the evening and, as I don’t like energy drinks, I got some caffeine tablets in the hope that they will help me make it through the evening.

To be honest, by the time we get to Civil War I’m going to be just a bit too excited to fall asleep!! But every little helps.

I’m really looking forward to Civil War.
Apart from the trailers and a few TV spots I’ve pretty much avoided trying to find out anything about the film.
I get the feeling it’s going to be an emotional ride and Marjorie has fully prepared by getting herself some tissues. She is so hyped it’s untrue.

So, that’s my day.
No doubt I will be giving a quick review at some point tomorrow.
Don’t worry, I won’t fill it full of spoilers. I know it doesn’t get released for another week in the US!!

CAN’T DENY IT

I can’t deny it, I’m getting a little bit excited.
Batman vs Superman is less than a week away from release.
Due to work and gaming comittments on Ian’s part, we are having to wait until the 27th to see it.
However….
We have chosen to see it in IMAX!! and we are taking Marjorie with us. She is going to freak!
This is going to be amazing in IMAX.
Henry Cavill has competition because Ben Affleck is looking exceedingly hot!

We are inching closer and closer to some of the biggest films of the year.
I have finally got Star Wars episode 7 out of my system although the Bluray is ordered and will be arriving on my doorstep on 18th April so I may do some more gushing over that one on yet another viewing.

To ease the pain of the incredibly long wait for Episode 8, we have some other pretty big franchises to keep us entertained.

This year alone, Marvel and DC are battling it out for supremacy.
DC are finally getting into the swing of things with the aforementioned Batman vs Superman but they are also introducing us to the Suicide Squad.
This is probably my most anticipated film this year and I sooo want it to do well.

Marvel is still one step ahead with continuations in the Captain America Franchise with Captain America: Civil War.
I have been talked into a movie marathon by Marjorie.
She is a huge Captain America fan so we are going to see re-runs of Captain America: The First Avenger and Captain America: The Winter Soldier followed by a midnight sceening of Captain America: Civil War!!
I haven’t done a movie Marathon since 1991 when I went to see the first 6 Star Trek movies.
Anyway, if this trailer is anything to go by, it will be worth it.

Then the following month we have X-Men Apocalypse.
Really looking forward to this one and can’t wait to see Oscar Isaac in something completely different for him as he is playing Apocalypse. Takes a minute to realise it’s him under all that makeup and costume.

Marvel are also introducing us to a new character this year, Dr Strange.
He’s being played by Benedict Cumberbatch but there is no trailer yet.

Doctor Strange

I think that’s it for DC and Marvel this year. I’m sure someone will correct me if I’m wrong.

Another Franchise that’s back this year is Star Trek.
I am a long time fan of Star Trek and I absolutely love the previous 2 re-boot movies.
I know there are a lot of die hard fans out there that will disagree with me but I think JJ Abrams did a fabulous job of breathing life back into the franchise.
I can’t wait for Star Trek Beyond.

And of course the end of the year sees another Star Wars Franchise movie.
NOT THE ONE I WANT… but one to tide us over until next year.
Star Wars Rogue One is the first of the stand alone Star Wars movies and tells the story of how the plans for the original Death Star were retrieved before Episode 4: A New Hope.
There is no official trailer release yet (so forget what it says in the title) but this appears to be a teaser that was shown at a convention and hand filmed so the quality isn’t great.

Anyway, these are some of the ‘stand out’ films I can’t wait to see this year.
I’m sure there are many more in between but I could be here all day.
It’s going to be a good year for movies.

SQUEEZED INTO THE DAY

Before I end the day with a bit of Joel, I managed to squeeze in a bit of Henry!

Henry - 1

Henry - 2

There’s always room for Henry!

So….
Captain America: The Winter Soldier
The Chronicles of Riddick
Cold Light of Day

Now I just need to choose which Joel film I’m in the mood for to end the day.
That could take the rest of the evening!!
I think I will flip a coin between ‘Easy Money’ and ‘In Your Veins’

Night Y’all

DAY OFF

OK, the decision has been made.
Today is a day off.
Mum has been round and caught up on my ironing.. (spoilt!! I know!)
Ian is in bed because he’s on nights, so I can’t do any hoovering.
I’ve got dinner sorted and had a quick tidy up.
I have three days off over the weekend for a real clean up around the house.

So!

Today is going to be a movie day.

I’ve had a couple of hours to think it over and I have come to the conclusion that today I am definately in the mood for a bit of this!

today 01

And this.

today 02

Possibly a little of this.

today 03

I might end the day on a litte of this!

today 04

A few nibbles, a couple of beers……
Could be a perfect day!

IS IT THE COSTUMES OR THE MUSCLES – UPDATED

Way back on February 7th 2012 I posted a blog entitled ‘Is it the Costumes or the Muscles’
https://mumofthreedevils.wordpress.com/2012/02/07/is-it-the-costumes-or-the-muscles/

Anyway, I thought it was about time that was updated because there have been some amazing films since I posted that blog and I have come to the conclusion that it is most definitely the costumes that grab my attention before complete obsession of the actor takes over!!

The first mid life crisis obsession was Dredd with Karl Urban.
I really don’t know why I became so obsessed with this character.
I never read the comics and didn’t know much about him apart from what my husband had told me.
However, in Sept 2012, along came Dredd.
I went to the cinema with my husband and……

Dredd 1

WHAM!!!
Mid life crisis obsession number one had started.
For the next 17 months, Karl Urban was my number one obsession.

I watched everything I could lay my hands on and added to my film collection with 18 of his films!

I’ve got to know him and who he is as a person.
How he’s a complete geek himself and loves his job and his fans.
He’s even named one of his sons Indiana after one of his favourite film characters.
He’s only 3 years younger than me.
He loves surfing.
He loves Star Trek and idolised his nemesis, DeForest Kelley, who played Dr McCoy in Star Trek, a role he has now made his own in the re-boot.

302

300

I love him and I still love him.

However…..
February 7th 2014 and a trip to the cinema to see a re-boot of a childhood favourite has bumped poor Karl down a peg.

Robocop.
robo

I loved the original Robocop with Peter Weller and I was intrigued to see how it could be brought up to date.
I did not expect to love it as much as I did and I certainly didn’t expect to become quite so obsessed with the actor taking on the role.

robo1

Joel Kinnaman is beautiful.
He is absolutely adorable in ‘In Your Veins’, heartbreaking in Johan Falk and completely naive in Easy Money.

Joel 06

I cannot get enough of him!!
He’s added to my film collection by 7 films and Robocop is due out on Bluray in 18 days!!
Frustrating thing is that he’s only just really taking off so I’ve already seen all I can see and am on the edge of my seat waiting to see what he does next!!
I can’t wait to see the last series of The Killing on Netflix in August.
Steven Holder is probably his best character to date.

Ex drug addict, streetwise and cocky Detective.

Holder 02

I have just realised I’m getting completely off topic!!

The whole reason for this blog is costumes.
My past 2 obsessions have kicked off because of costumes.
Costumes that virtually cover the actors faces!!

Superheroes in general have become a lot hotter in recent years.
Gone is the spandex, camp and comic book look.
In is the pumped, tough and leather ‘new’ comic book look.

Superheroes 3

Is it any wonder I love superhero movies?
I can’t wait to see the new X-Men movie tonight when Ian gets home.

Let’s not forget that there are some extremely gifted actors under all those costumes who put a lot of work into looking that good just so that we can enjoy the characters.
Thank you guys and gals!!
Keep it up.

MOVIES TO SEE IN 2014

I’ve just been doing a bit of trolling on the internet to find out about movie releases in 2014.
I’ve decided to make movie going a bit more of a regular thing.
Movies were my hobby growing up and I miss not getting to the cinema more often.
Blurays are great on a big TV but it just isn’t the same as seeing them on the BIG screen and sharing the experience with lots of people.

So here are a few I’ve picked out that have tweaked my interest for one reason or another.
I’m sure there are lots more on the way that are more thought provoking and oscar worthy but when I go to the movies I want a bit of fun and escapism.
Thought provoking and oscar worthy can wait for my On Demand service.

So, starting with releases in January……

This first one has tweaked my interest for all the wrong reasons.
The story is dubious.
The acting looks a bit shaky.
Overall it looks a bit cheesy……… but
Kellan Lutz is Hercules.
The costumes and the muscles look jaw dropping.
The Legend of Hercules.

The next one is The Adventurer: The Curse of the Midas Box.
This time we have some great British talent. Sam Neill, Michael Sheen and Ioan Gruffudd.
Unfortunately, judging by the trailer, the story itself looks a bit weak.
Worth a try though.

Next is ‘Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit’
I love the past Jack Ryan movies,  The Hunt for Red October with Alec Baldwin, Patriot Games and Clear and Present Danger  with Harrison Ford and The Sum of All Fears with Ben Affleck.
I think my favourite to date has been the first one.
However, this time around they have gone right back to a very young Jack Ryan, just starting out in his career and much to little Dharma’s delight they have chosen Chris Pine to play Ryan.
The film is a PG 13…. mmmmm I might just be able to smuggle Dharma in to see it!!

In February we have the re-make of Robocop.
I loved the original but it has become very dated and camp.
This one looks like they have gone for the serious look and it actually looks good.

We have ‘Non-Stop’
Who’d have thought that Liam Neeson would be an action hero at this point in his life!

We also have ‘The Monuments Men’
I discovered this one completely by accident but it looks like it could be quite fun.

In March we have ‘Stretch’.
This is another Chris Pine movie but judging by the storyline I won’t be taking Dharma to see this one.
Considering it’s due for release in March, I can’t find a damned trailer for it!!

Storyline…
A chauffeur takes on a job for a billionaire who makes his life hell.

Patrick Wilson plays a limo driver who discovers he only has one shift left to pay off a big debt, and he rolls the dice. When the chauffeur picks up a reclusive billionaire (Chris Pine) with some deviant appetites, the driver vows to fulfill the guy’s every request, no matter how weird, to score the big tip that could square him. But as the night grows stranger and the driver is pushed into some very dangerous encounters, he worries that the freak in his back seat might just be his final fare.

There is a new biblical blockbuster on the way in the form of ‘Noah’

Moving into April we have ‘Captain America: The Winter Soldier’
This is the second solo outing for Captian America and it looks like it’s going to be incredible.

We also have an interesting looking film starring Johnny Depp. Not his usual over the top character in this one but some more down to earth acting with a frightening look into a possible future if technology keeps developing at the speed it already is.

‘Draft Day’ is another sports film from Kevin Costner. It also stars Tom Welling. It will be interesting to see him get his teeth into a good role. Haven’t seen much of him since Smallville ended.

In May things start to heat up a little.
Starting with ‘The Amazing Spiderman 2

Followed by ‘Godzilla’

Followed by another installment in the X-Men franchise with ‘X-Men: Days of future Past’

We finish the month with ‘Maleficent’
Continuing the recent glut of fairy stories we have a re-working of Sleeping Beauty with Angelina Joli playing Maleficent who has been fashioned on Disney’s 1950’s version of the character and she looks amazing!!

In June we have ‘ Edge of Tomorrow’
Stright off the back of Oblivion, we have another Tom Cruise adventure.

Followed by 22 Jump Street.
21 Jump Street wasn’t the greatest movie in history but any movie with Channing Tatum has got to be worth a look.

This month we also have ‘How To Train Your Dragon 2.
The first one was amazing and in this one, Hiccup is all grown up.

We also have ‘Transformers 4: Age of Extinction’
There is not trailer for this one yet and any information that has been leaked onto the internet has been taken down so quickly, I can’t keep up.
Just watch this space.

In July we start with ‘Dawn of the Planet of the Apes’
As a fan of the original movies I am interested to see where they are taking this series and how they are going to get there.

We also have ‘Jupiter Ascending’
I caught this one on a trailer on TV the other night.
Another Channing Tatum but in this one it looks like he really gets to flex hi muscles and moves!

This months also see another Hercules movie!!
Hercules: The Thracian Wars.
There’s no trailer yet but they have cast another favourite of mine in the title role. Dwayne Johnson.
Oh yes… tall, well built and perfect for the role of Hercules.
Again, watch this space.

We are now into August and it’s getting harder to find trailers for up coming movies because they are still filming or in post production.
For me, there is only one film I want to see in August.
I have been waiting 2 bloody years for this thing to be released!
It was filmed in the summer of 2011 for a release in 2012 however, after lots of wrangling and a change in distributor, the date kept getting pushed back until they have finally settled on August 29th 2014.
If it doesn’t get released next year I am simply going to burst!!
Can’t wait to see Karl Urban playing a complete shit!
I ‘still’ cannot find this on Youtube for a direct link so you’ll have to click on the following link to see the trailer.

http://moviepilot.com/movies/1075714-the-loft/trailers/1777319568001

After that things look pretty thin on the ground until Dec when we get the third in the Hobbit trilogy ‘There and Back Again’
There’s also another instalment to the Night at the Museum movies and this time it’s set in London.

There’s got to be more on the way, I’m just tuckered out looking for them.
I’m going to look at getting me and Ian movie cards. That way there’s no arguments about going to the movies a lot and get to see some of the films I wouldn’t normally get to see because I finances.
As long as we see a couple of films each, a month, then the rest is a bonus.
