I’ve just sat and watched a film called ‘Cherry’. I’ve been wanting to see this film for a while now. It stars ‘Tom Holland’, a young actor I’ve also been watching for a little while now. I love him to bits and I’ve been waiting to see where his career takes him.
He’s given his voice to a few animated films because his voice comes across as super excited and innocent and very young. He’s also tested the water with a serious role in ‘The Devil All the Time’ with Robert Pattinson. However, this film has really shown his acting chops!
This film has proven that he is not ‘just Spiderman’ and a ‘One hit wonder’. This kid is going places!!
Cherry tells the story of Cherry, who drifts from college dropout to army medic in Iraq – anchored only by his true love, Emily. But after returning from the war with PTSD, his life spirals into drugs and crime as he struggles to find his place in the world.
It is gritty and heart breaking and beautifully filmed. I did not expect the fourth wall breaks as he talks to the audience and this just made the film seem so much more personal. Tom reeled in an Oscar worthy performance and it’s such a shame it was delivered in the year of the pandemic. I had to stream this movie to see it. It would have made so much more of an impact had it been shown on the big screen.
I will continue to watch Tom as he throws himself into playing Spiderman and has all the fun he can during the press junkets, but I look forward to seeing more of Tom as he matures as an actor, and I have no doubt, we will be seeing him for years to come.
Apart from Tenet when lockdown eased a little last summer, I haven’t seen a film in the cinema for a whole year. It’s been a whole year since I had the anticipation and build up to a film I really want to see. It’s been a whole year since I’ve had any real look at what Adam Driver has been up to.
Even when he completed filming for The Last Duel at the end of last year, he kept himself out of the limelight, always hidden behind a mask when not on set and then disappeared back to New York for Xmas.
The last week has seen a big change as he started filming for House of Gucci with Lady Gaga. Paparazzi and fan photos have been flying out of Italy! Lady Gaga herself posted this little beauty.
She must have the magic touch because getting Adam to pose for a photo during filming is unheard of!!
Looks like I’m not the only one who has missed seeing Adam over the last year because Twitter has gone crazy. Not that I’m complaining. We’ve been getting daily looks at Adam and Gaga on set in their retro costumes as Maurizio Gucci and Patrizia Reggiani.
It’s been so Long since I’ve seen that smile! I find myself really looking forward to this film. It just remains to be seen how I will finally see it. Cinema or streaming? Who knows?
I’m beginning to get excited about new films again. Adam alone has one film completed and hopefully being released at Cannes this year. He has two in post production, one currently filming and one in pre-production, so after the drought of the last year, it’s looking good for a bit of a flood. Not forgetting Bond and Dune are also due this year.
With what’s been coming out of Twitter over the last few days, I will have a good idea of how the whole film will look before it’s even been released and I’m loving it…. even Adam’s blue contacts!!
Sorry. It just had to be done. I couldn’t keep quiet any longer. This is ‘MY’ opinion and I have no doubt that people will disagree with me.
I just can’t understand all the hype over the damned Oprah interview with Meghan and Harry!
I do love our royal family and they bring a hell of a lot of tourism and money into the country. I’m not denying they don’t have their faults and scandals, but that just makes them all the more popular. It may not seem it to many but they also do a lot of hard work bringing that tourism to the country and supporting charities and a lot of members are, or have been, serving military who have seen action. They are also born to it, so it is not a ‘choice’ to be part of this family…… unless you ‘marry’ into it. The queen was not actually expected to be queen until her uncle abdicated the crown and her father was thrust into the role of King. When she became queen, she committed her life to the position. She has never been ‘free’ to do as she pleases.
I have a lot of respect for Prince Harry. I have seen this young man grow up under the spotlight during some of the most awful experiences a person can endure and he has done it with the worlds cameras watching. Prince Harry served in the Army for ten years, rising to the rank of Captain and undertaking two tours of Afghanistan. He continues to work in support of his fellow servicemen, promoting support for wounded men and women as they adapt to life post-injury. He directed his charity, The Royal Foundation of The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and Prince Harry, to deliver the ‘Invictus’ games in partnership with the Ministry of Defence.
I have known about Meghan Markle since I watched Suits from day one back in 2011. I thought she was a stunning woman and enjoyed watching her in the series. But that’s about all I can say about her.
Now, ‘that’ interview. C’mon, really? The questions and answers all seemed a little ‘too scripted’ Oprah’s responses were never going to win an Oscar! The thought of sitting and watching the whole thing just did not appeal to me in any way, shape or form. I got enough from the news clips…. that we are still seeing (ZZZZZZzzzzzzzz)
Anyway, as for Meghan claiming she “didn’t understand what she’d let herself in for” by marrying Harry…. I’m definitely calling bullshit on that one!! There is NO WAY, anyone is allowed to marry anyone in that family without having to go through some major guidance and teaching on etiquette and protocols and know exactly what is to be expected of you and what you would be giving up!!
I have no doubt at all that Meghan may have underestimated any of this and it impacted her mental health, but she definitely knew, and when she decided she didn’t like it, she threw her toys out of the pram to get exactly what she wanted.
Let’s get onto that one shall we.
“We’ve had enough of living under the spotlight, we fear for our safety and the safety of our child/children. Let’s move to America and live a quiet life, out of the spotlight and free to live a relatively normal life”.
YEAH…….. then we’ll go on one of the biggest talk shows in history and trash the fam!
I know exactly who’s wearing the pants in this relationship and I think that one day, in the not too distant future, Harry may just wake up and smell the roses.
Right! Today is the first day of 11 days of annual leave and I have really been looking forward to it, not because I had anything special planned, but because I really needed it!
Like everyone else in the country at the moment, I have had enough, but with the vaccination programme in full swing and a road map out of lockdown giving us some dates to reach for, I can see light at the end of the tunnel.
However, the last year has seen a real dip in my fitness and it wasn’t good to start with! I have piled on the weight and I am now really feeling it in my right knee, my hips and my lower back after a long day at work. My uniform is now very snug but I refuse to get a bigger size. I need to lose the weight. I look really tired in my face. Just over three years ago when I went to Italy for my brother’s wedding, I had lost about 3 stone in weight and I felt great. I want to get back to ‘that’ me and there’s no reason I can’t!
I want the 2017 me back!! I was happier. I looked healthier. I didn’t have bloody great bags under my eyes and I was able to have my hair cut every 5 – 6 weeks! Can’t remember the last time I was in the mood simply to play with filters!
Don’t think anything will be happening today though. It started with a pretty good lay in until almost 9am…. believe it not that’s a good one for me as my body clock usually has me out of bed by 8am on a day off.
I have been sitting here pondering plans for the next week over a milky coffee (problem number 1). I know I still have alcohol in the fridge (problem number 2) I know I still have snackable rubbish in the cupboards (problem number 3) I have made no meal plans (problem number 4) I just have no motivation (problem number 5)
So, where to start?
Today I am just going to chill but it doesn’t mean I am going to do nothing. I have decided to get organised and plan a little bit today so I don’t have to think about things too much.
Problem number 1 – Quite simple. I have just had my last cup of milky coffee. I need to think about a proper breakfast from now on and stop having milky coffee when I wake up and for my morning break at work!!
Problem number 2 – I’ll fix that one today!!
Problem number 3 – I need to sort through my cupboards and get rid of all the rubbish.
Problem number 4 – I am going to sit and make calorie counted meal plans and do some shopping around them so I don’t have to ‘think’ about food all the time.
Problem number 5 – I am hoping that sorting out problems 1 – 4 will help with number 5.
Seeing it all written down like this is actually quite motivating.
As I headed towards this annual leave, I already had a plan to get cracking on my back garden and get it all spruced up ready for summer. It’s been really neglected over the last year and needs a lot of work but I want to try and make it easier to keep tidy in the future. With an idea in mind, I have been getting a few bits delivered so my back garden now has 9 x 100L bags of bark, a 50m roll of weed matting, 6 galvanised steel rolls of lawn edging and a few new tools sitting it waiting for me to get cracking. I just need to make a trip to our local garden centre to choose a few nice shrubs for a bit of colour. Looking at the weather for the next week, I need to aim to get the garden done before Weds if I want to avoid rain. If I remember, I’ll do some before and after pictures.
Ok, this blog has wasted enough time, I’m going to get cracking.
I caught this poem being shared on Facebook earlier today, and as I read it, it really struck a chord with me.
You’re not imagining it, nobody seems to want to talk right now. Messages are brief and replies late.
Talk of catch ups on zoom are perpetually put on hold. Group chats are no longer pinging all night long.
It’s not you. It’s everyone. We are spent. We have nothing left to say. We are tired of saying ‘I miss you’ and ‘I cant wait for this to end’. So we mostly say nothing, put our heads down and get through each day.
You’re not imagining it. This is a state of being like no other we have ever known because we are all going through it together but so very far apart.
Hang in there my friend. When the mood strikes, send out all those messages and don’t feel you have to apologise for being quiet.
This is hard. No one is judging.
Donna Ashworth Author of poetry book, ‘to the women’
As I read it, I realised that it could have been me saying those very words. I have been finding it very hard to carry on any kind of conversation online with anyone lately.
At work, I thrive with a bit of conversation. With the kids I look after, with their parents, with my colleagues and when I get into teaching mode with the students I feel like I’m talking their ears off!!
At home it’s getting really tough to even acknowledge a message. In the early days of COVID we did the occasional Zoom family gathering but they have since disappeared. I wouldn’t know what to say if we had one.
I have to admit that I’ve been one of the lucky ones. I have continued to work throughout the pandemic (albeit at a hospital!) I’m the one that goes out for the shopping because the hubby is high risk. Apart from being very limited on what I can do outside of work, my life hasn’t changed much. I can only imagine what it’s been like for others not able to even go to work.
However, I am now realising just how much not having my Mum come round in the mornings and losing the freedom to just pop to the cinema, have a weekend away in London or just meet up with mates in the pub, is having an effect on me. My ability to carry an online conversation much beyond ‘how you doing?’ has gone.
I have found myself becoming a lot more emotional over things that I wouldn’t have normally blinked an eye at previously when watching TV and films.
Speaking of films…. As of today, just 51 days into the year, I have so far watched 101 films!! They seem to be the thing that I’ve latched on to for my sanity. Old films, familiar films, something I can literally have on in the background when I’m concentrating on other things. For example, as I write this, film 102 is on in the form of the 2009 Star Trek. I just really can’t wait to see a BIG NEW film in the CINEMA!!
I think that what hasn’t helped me recently is a couple of things. The diet I promised myself after Xmas never materialised and I feel fat and old and tired all the time. Going to work in the dark and coming home in the dark after nearly 13 hours on my feet is depressing.
SO! things have got to change. I have some annual leave in a couple of weeks so I have set that as my target to start the diet. I have GOT to get out for fresh air and exercise on my days off. With spring about to literally spring, the lighter mornings and evenings will start to come back and hopefully that will be a bit of a boost to my morale and I need to do whatever I can to help it.
If you catch me mooching around Facebook, please tell me off!! But mainly, if I don’t answer a message immediately or my conversation with you is over in seconds, please don’t hold it against me.
There was a time……… loooong ago, when I toyed with the idea of being a costume designer. As a movie fan I knew that costumes are always a big part of what makes or breaks a film. I even took needlework at O’level and made myself a herringbone winter coat that was fashionable at the time. Unfortunately, I quickly found out that I enjoyed watching the films more than I enjoyed making clothes, so my dream died before I even left school.
Anyway, to cut a long story short, I found out today that ‘Gucci’ starring Lady Gaga and Adam Driver is going to start filming in Milan on 10th March. A closer look at locations for shooting reveal that they will be shooting at some Villas in Lake Como and around Milan, Florence and Rome!!
OMG I’m so jealous. I would kill to have to work in all of those places. The costume designers on that film not only get to work there, they have the enviable task of designing clothes for Adam Driver!! Mmmm, maybe letting me loose with a tape measure around Adam would not be such a good idea!!
Anyway, the film tells the story of how Patrizia Reggiani, the ex-wife of Maurizio Gucci, plotted to kill her husband, the grandson of renown fashion designer Guccio Gucci. Lady Gaga is playing Patrizia and Adam is playing Maurizio.
A look at the life of Maurizio on Wikipedia revealed the following. He was born on September 26, 1948 in Florence. When his father died in 1983, Maurizio inherited his father’s majority stake in the company and launched a legal war against his uncle Aldo Gucci for full control of Gucci (a prosecution led by Rudolph Giuliani) In 1988, Maurizio sold almost 47.8% of Gucci to the Bahraïn-based investment fund Investcorp and withheld the other 50%. From 1991 to 1993, Gucci’s finances were in the red. Maurizio was blamed for spending extravagant amounts of money on the company’s headquarters in Florence and Milan. Maurizio went on to sell his stock in Gucci in 1993 for $170 million to the Bahrain-based investment group, Investcorp. In 1995, a year and a half after the sale of Gucci, he was gunned down by a hired hit man and his ex-wife Patrizia was convicted of arranging the killing in 1998.
I’m hoping the film will be telling this story as a whole, either just like this or through flash backs during Patrizia’s court case. I want to see lots of Adam surrounded by Italy and in gorgeous clothes spending obscene amounts of money before he gets killed!!
The film is aiming for a November release in the US. No date for the UK yet.
On the run up to Xmas last year I was stupidly tempted by a pop up advert from Facebook. I usually steer clear of these adverts like the plague but I just couldn’t resist.
It was from a company called Quoyora who regularly have pop up adds for interested looking clothing. They were advertised as gloves and they were to be a stocking filler for one of my daughters who loves pandas.
I went against my usual caution and ordered them and this was in November. They finally arrived today and after all that time, what I received today was a complete disappointment!!
They are badly shaped mittens and not gloves. However, the most disappointing thing is the panda itself. It is simply a large flat patch that has been stitched to the back of the mittens. No three dimensions to it in any way and no shiny glass eyes. So badly made a two year old could have done a better job!!
Thankfully I didn’t spend a huge amount on them so it’s not a huge loss. But for people who are tempted to buy more than a few pieces of their clothing it is simply going to be money down the drain. Don’t be tempted by these adverts!!
I’ve been watching a story unfolding over the last few days with much concern. A Portuguese actress by the name of Lidia Franco had apparently made claims in a recent interview that she had ‘A Very Bad Experience’ filming 2018’S movie ‘The Man Who Killed Don Quixote’.
She claimed that Adam Driver “might be great as an actor, but he is a terrible person and does not deserve for us to be here now talking about him,” and “He behaved very badly with me. Physically. He attacked me.”
Of course this was very worrying for me as a HUGE fan. I found it difficult to believe and after lots of recent claims with other actors I know how damaging such claims can be to an actor’s career. Don’t get me wrong, if the allegations are true, then the actor/s in question deserve every thing coming to them, even Adam.
However, I like to think that I know Adam pretty well. I see and hear people talking about him all the time and he is seen as an incredibly humble, reclusive, compassionate, generous and hard working man. Directors are fighting to work with him and co-stars gush about him in interviews. This allegation against him just didn’t make sense.
Daisy Ridley, who worked with Adam in Star Wars episodes 7, 8 and 9 has said in interviews…..
“I love working with Adam,” “He is a phenomenal actor, and is always so immersed in the character, that it is not difficult to act with him. In the torture scene in Episode VII, everything was very complex. We were repeating takes for a long time, and I remember thinking, ‘How will I get to that same point with each new attempt?’ And Adam was so into the scene, and gave me so much time…I don’t know if anyone else would have done that.” She goes on…. “We were filming a big fight scene and we were like, ‘Are you okay? Is everything alright? Is the distance good? ”There has always been a concern for each other’s safety and well-being,” she says.
Adam doesn’t hold back in fight scenes and as a tall, broad and looming figure, he comes across as very intimidating. At the end of the day, he is working with ‘professionals’ who know this and he is meticulous when it comes to training and choreography. There is NO WAY Adam would attack anyone physically on purpose. It’s just not in his nature.
It has been a relief to see today that the actress in question has admitted that “nothing happened and it was all a misunderstanding” It turns out that she is upset because she thinks she was cut from the movie, even though she is still in the credits”!
It looks like this actress didn’t get Adam’s acting style one little bit. He is very much a method actor and will stay in character on set during the duration of filming. If his character is a dick, then Adam is pretty much a dick all the time on set, BUT… at the end of the day he always says thank you to the people he’s working with, including the extras. He comes across as a bit of a diva while he’s working but that is simply so he can maintain his character and do the best job possible.
This actress seems to have used this as an excuse to make this totally ridiculous claim.
“Malicious and cruel bitch!!”
Thankfully Adam is not on social media so has probably missed the worst part about all of this, however, it did make it onto the US national news services so he’s probably fully aware of all the hoo ha. Poor guy.
It looks like the only career that’s been damaged is hers.
As a film fanatic, the last year has been a bit frustrating. Lockdown has seen most completed movies having their release dates pushed back time and time again and any film being shot was put on hold. Cinemas have shut their doors for safety and I totally understand this. Being enclosed spaces where lots of people sit together for hours at a time, they are melting pots for COVID.
In the last 12 months, I have been to the cinema just once! When restrictions had a bit of a relaxation period here in the UK in August, I went to see Tenet. It was disappointing to say the least and then shortly after this, cinemas were forced to close their doors again and haven’t opened since. I have recently streamed Wonder Woman 1984 and I thank my lucky stars that I didn’t actually waste my time seeing this one in the cinema as it was, quite frankly, a total shambles and complete shit.
As anyone who reads this blog regularly knows, Adam Driver is my favourite actor and I will admit that I can be a bit obsessive, but he brings a smile to my face for lots of reasons, so I am not ashamed to admit this. Frustratingly he is the worlds BIGGEST recluse when it comes to his private life. It took two years to find out he now has a son!! Who is probably nearer 3 years old now and we still haven’t ever seen a picture of him with Adam or even Joanne!
Adam was in the middle of filming ‘The Last Duel’ with Matt Damon at the beginning of last year and this had to shut down filming as lockdown hit. It finished filming towards the end of the year with lots of safety measures put into place.
I haven’t seen a new Adam film since 2019 when we had.. not one…. but FOUR movies. The Report, The Dead Don’t Die, Marriage Story and The Rise of Skywalker. Adam fans were spoilt and then COVID ripped it all away from us as Adam went into hiding.
He is now filming again but everything is under wraps or behind facemasks. Any sneak peaks we have had are few and far between.
Any photos have been behind the scenes with facemasks firmly in place. The best evidence we’ve had in the last year that Adam is doing well was a socially distanced appearance on the John Oliver show ‘Last Week Tonight’ back in Nov. After John has spent weeks squeezing dubious references of Adam into his shows, Adam was gracious enough to agree to appear in the final show of the season and it was hilarious and Adam was looking really well and very fresh! Let’s just say that his hair care is on point!
However, in a whole year, this is just not enough!! I’m so desperate, I’ve taken to doing 1000 piece custom jigsaw puzzles I’ve had made of Adam. It’s very sad. There’s only so many times you can watch a back catalogue of his movies before needing to give them a break!
Anyway, I am getting more and more hopeful for the coming year. I don’t think things will be easing off with lockdown for a few more months yet, but as the mass vaccination programme is underway worldwide, we should start to see results soon and life should slowly start to normalise again. How that normal will look is anyone’s guess. I have no idea if my local Cineworld will ever open it’s doors again.
BUT…. here’s the exciting part….. Adam now has 5 movies on the go.
1 = ‘Annette’ is complete and should have premiered at last years Cannes Film Festival. It should now be premiering this year instead. Adam plays a stand up comedian in this one and has a 2 year old daughter with a surprising gift. It is some kind of musical in which Adam sings more than he doesn’t!!
2 = ‘The Last Duel’. This is the film that had to postpone filming due to the pandemic. Principle filming is now finished and it is in post production. Hopefully we’ll get this one in October. Adam plays Jacques LeGris and after checking the actual history of the story, this film will not end well for Adam!
3 = ’65’ is currently filming. It’s into it’s last three weeks of filming and is a sci-fi thriller. I heard a rumour today that dinosaurs are somehow involved so it looks like it could be quite interesting! There is no release date yet but at it appears it may be quite heavy on special effects, I’m assuming we can look forward to this one sometime next year.
4 = ‘Gucci’ is in pre-production and Adam is set to work with Lady Gaga, Jared Leto and possibly Al Pacino. Adam is playing Maurizio Gucci and it tells the story of how Patrizia Reggiani (played by Gaga) the es-wife of Maurizio Gucci, plotted to kill her husband, the grandson of renown fashion designer Guccio Gucci. So again, this doesn’t end well for Adam but filming will be taking place in Florence, Italy!! I’m just picturing Adam in all those Gucci suits and strutting his stuff around Italy. All my dreams in one place. Anyway, we will hopefully get to see this one in November this year.
5 = ‘White Noise’ is another Noah Baumbach movie that has been commissioned by Netflix. Plot unknown at present. After the success of Marriage Story (Oscar winning and also starring Adam), Noah has been exclusively signed by Netflix for the foreseable future. It hasn’t been confirmed officially yet but it looks like Adam is set to star. Again, there is no release date for this but Adam has got a pretty full plate again this year when it comes to filming so we’ll just have to wait and see.
Quite a mixed bag. You certainly can’t accuse Adam of being type cast.
So, there you have it. Another excuse for me to blog about Adam squeezed out. I will ‘hopefully’ blog about him more and more over the coming months with more substantial photographs and maybe even some trailers to keep me going until I get to see the movies themselves.
