I know, I know…. where has my usual blogging about Oscars buzz been this year?
Quite frankly, I haven’t been buzzed by it this year and can honestly say that I’ve only actually seen one of the nominated movies. As a consequence, I had no thoughts on who or what should win.
COVID has meant that it’s been a very lean year for cinema going and, since March 24th 2020 until April 27th 2021, I have only seen one movie in the cinema.
Seeing movies on a streaming service is just not the same, so the last year has mainly consisted of old films and looking forward to the plethora of films due in the cinema, and in some cases, over due, later this year.
The Oscars this year was also hit with indifference as the number of people who watched the ceremony dropped a staggering 58% to less than 10 million.
The ceremony itself took place in a total of 20 locations to allow for social distancing and reduce travelling amongst the nominees and the audience capacity was limited to 170 people, with attendees being rotated in and out throughout the show. As a whole, the show received mainly negative reviews.
Even with these restrictions, stars still made a splash on the red carpet.
For the most part, the women’s dresses were stunning and I think Amanda Seyfried in her stunning red Armani won the night for me.
But there were also some flops in my opinion. I’m sorry, don’t judge me but what was Laura Dern thinking and Viola Davis looks like a paper lantern !!
Even the men were stepping up a gear this year.
But unfortunately there is always a dud amongst the men too, and the Oscars musical director, Questlove, showed just how to fuck up a stylish black suit that should have been impossible to fuck up!
Anyway, that’s it for this year!
I’ll eventually get around to watching some of the nominees/winners and ‘hopefully’ I’ll be a little more enthusiastic next year.
At least there should be some Adam Driver movies to gush about next year. Two haven’t been release yet and there is already talk about Oscar nominations. Only time will tell.
