If you are one of these strange people who don’t like watching trailers before a movie is released, please do not go any further.
You have been warned.
OK, it’s been a few days now since the new trailer for Star Wars: The Last Jedi hit the internet.
Can I just say ‘OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG!!!!!’
It had the desired effect I was expecting. Excitement, confusion, anticipation, surprise.
I think I was actually holding my breath through the entire first watch.
I think it’s done it’s job very well.
It has given us a good feel for how the movie will play out but I think there are one or two red herrings in there to throw us off the scent.
On the internet, it always amuses me to what lengths people will argue about what they believe will happen. They have a viewpoint, they’ve read the trailer one way and if anyone argues otherwise, all hell breaks loose! Most of the time it’s all in good humour.
‘Most of the time’!
Anyway, after scrutinising the trailer myself over the last few days, I thought I’d give you my perspective.
Remember, these are my thoughts and viewpoints…. I could be completely wrong!!
This is the fun part.
Trying to figure it all out and then being completely dumbfounded when you realise you’d got it all wrong and they pull something completely different out of the bag.
The opening few seconds….
Yes!! My baby looking all lonely, contemplative and angsty.
I love that Kylo is now out of the robes and into a more form fitting uniform.
We actually get to ‘see’ Adam in this movie. He’s big and he’s beautiful.
What is he overseeing? Preparation for a battle?
Rey is taking to her lightsabre. She’s looking determined.
Daisy is looking really good. Her exercise regime has definately paid off.
So, Luke is afraid of Rey’s powers because they remind him of Kylo’s. I really hope this film explores what actually happened at Luke’s academy and how Kylo became known as ‘The Jedi Killer’. Why is Luke so scared?
Can I just say again….. Adam is looking incredible in this film!!
At least we get to actually see his face through most of this one.
If there’s one thing Adam can do very well it’s angst and anger.
Listen to how calm he is when delivering the line ‘Let go of the past…. kill it, if you have to’.
And yes!! He’s still having tantrums.
This, I believe, is a red herring. We are meant to believe that Kylo kills Leia but there is just no way this is going to happen. Look at the angst on his face as his finger hovers over that button!
Besides, it would be sloppy writing on Rian’s part to have Kylo kill both parents and we know that Leia (Carrie) is going to be given a better send off than that!!
Kylo is going to be more conflicted in The Last Jedi than he was in Force Awakens.
I am going to love every minute of it!!
I still don’t know what to make of them.
My kids love them and they haven’t even seen the movie yet.
I suspect there’s a lot more to them than we have been lead to believe. I have no doubt they are going to be some of the comic relief of this movie, but I also believe they are not to be underestimated.
Poe and Finn throw themselves into the hero spots of the film and I can’t wait to see that fight between Finn and Phasma.
I think, in the context of the trailer, this little line is aimed directly at the audience!!
I think Luke is right. I don’t think anyone has a clue how this is going to play out. Regardless of all the hype and speculation, I think there are going to be plenty of twists and turns and shocks along the way.
Also… the crystaline foxes… what significance do they have? They are obviously being protected by the resistance as the planet is attacked. Are they indiginous? Are they intelligent? Have they been helping the resistance?
OK, this is a scene I’ve watched over and over.
I believe this is going to be a pivotal moment. Not for Rey, but for Kylo!!
If you look closely at the scene earlier in the trailer where Kylo is picking up his sabre, it is obviously taking place in the same room Rey is being tortured by Snoke. You see the red guards in the back of both images. When Snoke says the words ‘fullfill your destiny’, I believe they are being spoken to Kylo.
Has he just been told to kill Rey, to complete his training, to become the most powerful sith that ever lived?
Is this the moment Kylo decides on a different path?
This is the moment that is causing more discourse on the internet than any other.
Here’s my take on it and please remember that this is just a theory. I’m not insisting I’m right and I’m probably completely wrong.
I believe this is the biggest red herring in the entire trailer.
I have no doubt that Kylo and Rey will be joining forces (excuse the pun) in some form during this movie but I don’t think it is in this moment. In fact I think they are two completely different scenes that have been cleverly cut together.
I believe Rey is actually talking to Luke at the beginning of the movie when she says ‘I need someone to show me my place in all this’.
As to who Kylo is holding his hand out to?
It could still very well be Rey but I believe it could also be Leia.
I’ve done it. That’s what I got out of this trailer.
Now I just have to wait another two months to find out.
I already have my tickets for a double bill starting on 13th Dec at 21:00 with The Force Awakens and this leads into a midnight showing of The Last Jedi. I will be amongst the first to see it. I can’t wait!!
So I have just wasted a couple of hours playing with this and have rattled off around a thousand words.
I now have to get back to an essay that I still need to write and reference 1500 more words for.
Bet it doesn’t get finished today!!
