Film Reviews

DIDN’T SEE THAT ONE COMING!

So, I didn’t stay up to watch the Oscars. I needed my bed.

Anyway, I wake up this morning and eagerly scan the news sites for winners and Youtube for clips and all I can say is……

WHAT A FUCK UP THAT WAS!!!

How was it even allowed to get that far? There’s no way that the acceptance speeches should even have started.
The La La Land crew must have been gutted! and in full view of millions of viewers.

Anyway, how did I do with my personal predictions?

Best Picture – La La Land…. ooops, no sorry it’s actually Moonlight!
I knew Hacksaw Ridge or Hidden Figures wouldn’t get it but I honestly thought La La Land would.
I’m glad the Academy didn’t bow to public and media opinion and went with their gut instead.
But that said, Moonlight, although deserving, didn’t quite hit the mark for me personally.

Best Actress – Emma Stone.
I made no predictions for this one because I haven’t seen the other performances.

Best Actor – Casey Affleck
There’s just no way that Casey Affleck’s performance was Oscar worthy in my opinion.
Both Denzel Washington and Andrew Garfield acted him off the screen.

Best Supporting Actress – Viola Davis
Yep, got that one spot on.
How they decided this one I’ll never know.
Out of the five nominated, I could easily put Michelle Williams at the bottom of the pile with Nicole Kidman right next door BUT Viola Davis, Octavia Spencer and Naomi Harris ALL gave astounding performances.

Best Supporting Actor – Marhershala Ali
Yep! Called that one too!
I’ve been keeping an eye on this guy since I first saw him in a TV series called ‘The 4400’
As much as I loved Dev Patel in Lion, I think Marhershala’s performances in both Moonlight and Hidden Figures won me over just a little bit more.

Best Director – Damien Chazelle, La La Land
Another correct prediction, unfortunately.
Sorry, but I firmly believe this should have gone to Hacksaw Ridge.

Finally, I mentioned a film that has been seriously underrated this year, Silence.
It was nominated for Best Cinematography but didn’t win.
No, it went to La La Land….SERIOUSLY?!!!
Did anyone watch Silence? The Cinematography in it was absolutely breathtaking and far superior to La La Land.

But in my very biased opinion it should have won, or at least been nominated for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Supporting Actor, Best Cinemtography, Best Adapted Screenplay…… hell…. everything possible!!!

And where the hell was Paterson?!!!!
Naaah, I’m not bitter at all!!
