2016 KICKS THE BUCKET!!

So 2016 was a disaster.
A totally depressing year and I don’t know anyone who was really feeling Xmassy at all.

As a hardened Star Wars fan, to end the year with the loss of both Carrie Fisher and her Mother Debbie Reynolds within 36 hours of each other is just mind numbing.

carrie-and-debbie

We can only hope that 2017 is better.

2016 is not going down without a fight though. I decided to pack away all the Xmas decs today to rid myself of any memories of 2016 and enjoy an evening in with my the hubster, but the decs fought back. Caught my arm nicely on a wire from a garland.

scratch

In 2016 I watched 301 films and went to the cinema 48 times. Not quite as impressive as last year but that’s something I intend to work on in 2017.

In my head I see a better year.
Jobs for both myself and my husband are pretty secure at this point and finances by the end of 2017 should be taking an up swing.

I have my brother’s wedding in Italy to look forward to in August even though I will be going without the hubby and kids.

My obsessions with Adam Driver and Domhnall Gleeson continue and I’m glad to say there’s lots to look forward to.

It all kicks off tomorrow evening when I will be going to see Adam’s new film, Silence. One to watch out for at the Oscars.

He then stars in ‘Girls’ Series 6 in february. This is the last in the series and will hopefully answer the questions about Hannah and Adam and Jessa and the rest of the gang and not leave us screaming at their decisions.

Then things are a little quiet until later in the year when he stars alongside Daniel Craig in ‘Logan Lucky’ and then of course with Domhnall in the much anticipated Star Wars Episode VIII.

I have no idea what his plans are for the rest of the year. He may focus on his non profit charity ‘Arts in the Armed Forces’ or he may squeeze in some other smaller projects. I will of course, be posting anything I hear about.

Domhnall on the other hand, has 6 films listed for 2017!
American Made is set for release in September and Stars Tom Cruise.
Already mentioned is Star Wars Episode VIII in December although I’m really worried that his character, General Hux, will be going down in a ball of flames with his ship!!
The other 4 films are all listed as in post production but have no release dates. Hopefully they will be released in 2017 but some may be release in 2018.
There is an as yet untitled A.A.Milne project where he plays A.A.Milne.

303

Crash Pad is about  a hopeless romantic who thinks he’s found true love with an older woman, only to learn that she’s married and that his fling is merely an instrument of revenge against her neglectful husband.
An as yet untitled Darren Aronofsky project which centers on a couple whose relationship is tested when uninvited guests arrive at their home, disrupting their tranquil existence.
And a futile and Stupid Gesture. Set in the 1970s and ’80s, about National Lampoon’s success and influence and how it created a new media empire overseen in part by the brilliant and troubled Doug Kenney.

Of course there are plenty of other films I’m looking forward to next year.

We have a new Spiderman to look forward to. He was introduced in the last Avengers movie and if that was anything to go by, then his stand alone movie is going to be good.
We have a new Bladerunner movie, a new Alien movie, a new Fast and Furious movie.
We have a Guardians of the Galaxy sequel which I’m REALLY looking forward to and another Thor movie.
Logan, Wonderwoman, Beauty and the Beast, The Mummy, Jumanji, Life, Kingsman 2, The Wall, World War Z 2. These are just a few.

I have to admit that I’m really looking forward to the new Justice League movie in November.
Ezra Miller’s movie ‘Flash’ may just become one of my favourite things. He’s adoreable!!

I can’t believe we still don’t have a title or teaser for Star Wars Episode VIII.
It now looks like Disney may be waiting for the release of their next juggernaut, Beauty and the Beast, to use it as a springboard for Star Wars advertising.
Beauty and the Beast gets released just before the big Star Wars Celebration event in Orlando in April so it makes sense that Disney will want to utilise it’s pulling power.

It’s still very frustrating though.

I am also looking forward to all the quiet films. The independent movies that whistle through the cinemas and hardly get a look in. Some of the best movies seem to just glide through with hardly a mention. Like Paterson!
What a stunning movie. It made it to a couple of local cinemas for a grand total of two weeks before disappearing to one or two cinemas in London.
It has only just been released in the US.
I can’t wait for it to hit Bluray in March.

I make no apologies for any gushing I do over the next year.
I intend to utilise my Cineworld card to it’s fullest.
I will attempt to enjoy 2017 and not let things get me down.
I fully intend to write more fan-fiction and yes… it may contain smut.
I will continue to embarrass my kids as I crash through my mid-life crisis.

It would appear that me and the hubster have the house to ourselves tonight!!
Murron is working at her favourite haunt, Esquires, and Marjorie and Dharma are utilising Nan and Grandad’s house while they are away in Brugges.
Marjorie has promised Dharma a takeout because she’s earning now.

So! Pact with the hubby. He’s turning off his tablet and PC at around 6 this evening and I’ll be turning off my PC at the same time. We are going to curl up and enjoy seeing 2016 kick the bucket.

BRING IT ON!!

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!

ABSOLUTELY GUTTED

So last night was a little depressing after hearing the news of Carrie Fisher’s death.

This morning however has been completely gutting as I worked my way through all the Facebook posts, Twitter feeds and my Tumblr dash only to be confronted by post after post, photo after photo, of people saying their goodbyes and sharing their stories.

It struck me hard that I’ve know this women since I was 8 years old.
She was one of the first heroines that showed me that girls can fight too.
She showed us how to overcome personal problems and give a big fuck you to the nay sayers.

To me, she is royalty.

BOXING DAY

Even though I had to work an early shift, Xmas day was still lovely.

I got home to a huge glass of wine handed to me on the doorstep and barely had a chance to sit down before everyone started ripping into their presents.

I spotted a bit of theme with the gifts from my kids.

presents-2016

The Doodles book is going to be lots of fun. You can’t do anything but giggle uncontrollably when wearing the Chewie mask and the Kylo Pop head is actually kinda cute and is currently bopping away nicely on my speaker onlong with his masked counterpart bobble head!

I’ve been awake since 8 am today and it’s been a couple of hours now and the kids are only just beginning to show their faces.
The house smells wonderful. I’ve got turkey soup brewing on the hob.
It’s going to be a complete chillout day.

Feeling a bit nostalgic today after the news of George Michael’s passing.
Spent a little time flicking through some of his work before trawling through some other old favourite albums.
Currently listening to ‘Architecture and Morality’ by OMD.

Come on 2016, there’s only a few days left. Don’t take anyone else!

MADE MY DAY

So today has been a mixed barrel.

I started early with a fried breakfast cooked for me by my hubster before I set off for an early shift at work.
You can’t work in a hospital and not expect to work the odd Xmas Day!!
I work on a childrens’s ward too so the obligatory visit from Santa helps to make the morning more enjoyable.

I got home mid afternoon to a lovely Christmas dinner that had been prepared by me but cooked by my Mother.
We followed dinner with a game of Cards Against Humanity.
I don’t think Grandad was impressed and I don’t think Nanny ‘got’ it to be honest.
We had a really good laugh.

Anyway, Everyone has now collapsed.
Mum and Dad have gone home. Murron and Marjorie are snoring on the sofas. Ian has gone to bed.

I however, have just found an interview Adam Driver gave CBS that was aired this morning.
I’ve managed to get some interesting new stills of him in his youth and as a marine.

However, they also showed some more footage from ‘Silence’ that really shows the effect of the weight loss he sustained for the part.
I literally could cry.
He looks so gaunt.

The film is out at the beginning of January and it is being hotly tipped for Oscars!!

Right, I need a cuddle. Time for bed.

2016 CAN JUST NAFF OFF!!

Just when I was beginning to get a little festive we wake up to the news that ‘our princess’ Carrie Fisher, is in intensive care after suffering a heart attack on a London to LA flight.
She had the attack 15 minutes before landing and luckily there was a medic and nurses on board to administer CPR. She was still receiving CPR after landing!
She is now being looked after at an LA hospital and it is still a little touch and go as to whether or not she’ll recover.

Now….. trying to get a little festive again.

Let’s talk about the Christmas number one.

Rockabye by Clean Bandit…… REALLY???!

I’m sorry but this is not ringing my bells. Not my kind of music at all.
The Christmas number two however is AMAZING!!!

Human by Rag’N’Bone Man.

I caught onto this one fairly late because I don’t listen to the radio very often but when I caught it a couple of weeks ago I fell in love with it.
So annoyed it didn’t make number one.

I had a few giggles yesterday keeping up with Riyadh on Snapchat.
Poor lad was trying to get home to Dublin for Xmas but his flight was initially delayed before being diverted to Shannon because of ‘hurricane Barbara’ and then he had to take an excruciating bus ride from Shannon to Dublin.

It was amusing watching him getting all festive at the airport and then slowly getting more and more frustrated.
He made friends on the flight and kept a smile on his face.
When he finally made it home there was a quick hello to his Mum and Dad and then he barged his way through the house to ‘see the tree’!!
The last I saw of him, he was looking very chilled, laying on a sofa watching ‘Nigella’.

He’s had an amazing year and I think 2017 is only going to be even better for him.

Right, today is final prep day.
Bit of tidying, bit of defrosting, bit of chillin, prep the vegetables and turkey, lay the table and then put my feet up and get ready for an early shift at work in the morning.

BRING IT ON!!

INVOLUNTARY BODY REACTIONS

Involuntary body reactions are not always embarassing!

I have realised over recent weeks that I have an involuntary body reaction every time I hear Hozier sing.
I get goose bumps and my hairs stand on end and it makes me feel quite tingly and nice.
To say I have fallen in love with this mans voice is an understatement.
He is amazing!!

Sitting in the cinema the other night, I saw the trailer for ‘Live By Night’ and the hairs automatically went up on my arms and then I realised they were using ‘Arsonists Lullaby’ by Hozier.

Don’t take my word for it. Listen for yourself.

2016 ROUNDUP

So 2016 has been a globally bad year.

Let’s face it. It’s been a SHIT year.

The loss of too much talent to comprehend.
Most notably for me, and I know I’ve missed a lot of names off this list….
David Bowie
Alan Rickman
Prince
Victoria Wood
Muhammad Ali
Anton Yelchin
Kenny Baker
Gene Wilder
Ron Glass
Andrew Sachs
Glen Frey
Frank Finlay
George Kennedy
Guy Hamilton
John Glen

The world in general just seems to be going to pot.
Brexit, Trump, Aleppo, Bombings galore, earthquakes, plane disasters, we are closer to a third world war than we have been in 20 years, Zika virus…… the list goes on.

It’s depressing.
It’s enough to make you want to completely avoid watching or reading the news and keep yourself in a protective bubble away from it all, but that would be impossible.

Personally things have been tough too.
Finances were and still are a struggle after Ian had to take a pay cut to take a position off of shifts. After over 30 years, shifts and night work were taking a toll and he needed to get off of them. The good news is that the position he’s taken is more challenging for him and he has more scope to progress and hopefully earn ‘more’ money than he did on shift.
In the meantime we are still having to deal with being £300 – £400 down on our usual take home pay.

Health in general has been poor all round.
Ian’s Psoriatic Arthritis is really giving him problems at the moment.
He’s finally been diagnosed with a sever vitamin D deficiency which could be causing a lot of his symptoms at the moment, so there’s light at the end of the tunnel.

My knee has never really recovered after a Baker Cyst I didn’t even know I had, ruptured.
I am currently under physios who are giving me a few more weeks of excersises before deciding wheather or not to send me back to Orthos for an arthroscopy.

Dharma had a small surgery on her wrist to release some tendons because she was constantly in pain when holding things like pens and cutlery. She’s still under physios until all the underlying healing is done and hopefully the pain subsides.

Marjorie’s foot is starting to hurt her again! But she just keeps getting on with things. She knows it’s a problem she has for life and has resigned herself to it.

Murron hasn’t done too bad this year. She still struggles with her anxiety at times BUT she deals with it and ploughs on when she can.

Now I’m really feeling depressed.
It’s now a week before Xmas and I just don’t feel Xmassy at all!!
Anyone who knows me will knows that I am usually ‘full on’ at Xmas. Starting with 2 weeks of annual leave at the end of November, beginning of December, so that I can prepare and not have to worry about work. Gift buying, decorations, cards, baking, the works. I did it this year but it felt like I was doing it under duress. I just am NOT FEELING XMASSY.
I haven’t even got a Xmas CD in the car.

The bad year in general, coupled with the fact my kids are all growing up too fast and the knowledge that I am working an early shift on Xmas day, may all be contributing factors to my general mood. I give it another couple of days before I start to feel the tingle!
I did catch myself humming to a Xmas song Dharma was playing yesterday, so there’s hope!

NOW!….THE GOOD STUFF!!

It hasn’t all been doom and gloom.
One family wedding, two new babies and 2 more proposals.

Ian is loving his new job.

Murron got herself an apprenticeship and started earning a full wage for the first time ever.
Unfortunately this has enabled her to go tattoo crazy, get a motor bike and generally partay! Can’t blame her.

Marjorie started her film/media course at college and is LOVING it!! She’s already talking about Universtity and she has expressed an interest in Directing. She also got herself a part time job at MacDonalds which she doesn’t care for too much but she loves the money. So until she finds something else she’s sticking with it.
College and a job has changed Marjorie so much. She has bloomed since the summer and is so much more confident in herself. I’ve been really surprised.

Dharma is doing OK at school. She’s into her GCSE’s now. She’s identified her weaknesses and is working on them. She’s doing her best and that’s all I can ask.
I do feel a little sorry for her at the moment because she’s finding it really hard seeing her sisters earning and spending money. She’s feeling a bit left out.

I am going through a mid-life crisis.

I know this doesn’t sound like ‘good stuff’ but I’m enjoying it so as far as I’m concerned, it’s all ‘good stuff’.

The catalyst was ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ in December last year.
By the end of January this year I had seen it 10 times in the cinema and had become completely obsessed with Adam Driver and all his work.
He was joined by an obsession with Domhnall Gleeson that kind of crept up on me unexpectedly.

From these two actors alone my film collection has grown by 26 films.

Overall I think the collection has gone up by around 150 films and now stands at a a total of 1382!

I recently had the oportunity to see Adam in a Q and A after a preview screening for Paterson in London and that just topped off my year!! He’s amazing.

Curiosity got the better of me around April/May when I started reading fan-fiction and fell completely and hopelessly in love with the Kylux fandom. Stories around the the relationship between Kylo Ren and General Hux from Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Both characters played by Adam Driver and Domhnall Gleeson.

OMG! Hot stuff, fluffy stuff, angsty stuff. It’s got the lot and I can’t get enough.
I even started to write my own fiction which I have thoroughly enjoyed.

Of course, we’ve had the countdown to Star Wars Rogue One. Released on Thursday this week and we’ve already seen it twice!!!
Brilliant, Amazing, Funny, Gritty, So so good. Will definately be going to see it again.
That’s as much as I will say so I don’t spoil it for anyone.

My living room and dining room is a homage to movies and is currently looking a little on the Star Wars heavy side!! My Mum hates it but I don’t care. Me and Ian are Geeks. We’re not ashamed to flaunt our geekyness and embarassing the kids into our retirement is one of our joys in life. We don’t plan to stop anytime soon.

To say that my eyes have been opened to a few things this year is an understatement.
Mid-life crisis sexual awakening is an interesting thing!!

Seeing my eldest on a night out is something I’m debating maybe I shouldn’t have seen.
Having said that, I have loved the times I have spent out with her in recent months and If I hadn’t started going to Esquires I would never have discovered CC Smugglers!!

cc-smugglers-2

I am debating going out on New Years eve with her. Seeing the New Year in at the Barley Mow is quite appealing but I have to be at work at 10am the next day so I would have to be careful.
We’ll see. Watch this space.

Oh yes, how could I forget. I took Murron and Marjorie to see the Rocky Horror Picture Show on stage. AMAZING day.

and also, my discovery of a wonderful young man by the name of Riyadh Kalaf!!

Found him on Youtube and he’s given me some of the best laughs this year.
Look out for him in a new series for BBC three. He is currently filming a series about LGBTQ issues across the UK. No official title as yet so it is currently being called project rainbow.

The film that broke my heart this year has to go to ‘Holding the Man’
I have now watched it several times and I’ve read the book twice!! Something I have NEVER done in my life.

I blogged a review earlier in the year and that can be read HERE.

My favourite series of the year, next to Girls with Adam Driver, has been Queer as Folk.
It’s an old series that I got hooked on and it’s brilliant. I couldn’t get enough of it.
I just fell completely head over heels for Brain and Justin.

When I look back, my year has been quite gay!
And I mean that in the gay sense and not the happy sense. Gay seems to have been my kink this year and I absolutely love it.

So… what about next year…. OOH so much to look forward to.
But that is for another blog…… and it will most definately be including Star Wars!!
I really must get some work done today.
