I went to see mad Max the other night.
In my opinion it was an exciting film with absolutely tons of action but something was not quite right.
I think I’ve finally put my finger on what it was.
As much as it was set in a post apocalyptic world and Mad Max was indeed Mad…. wild eyed and crazy, it would have been better if the film was called Mad Furiosa!
I was expecting Tom Hardy to be the lead but instead I found a film where the title character was overshadowed by another character taking the lead.
Imperator Furiosa played by Charlize Theron.
Don’t get me wrong, it’s always good to see kick arse females in movies these days but this was supposed to be re-launching Mad Max to a new generation and I was expecting a little bit of back history and how Max became Mad.
Instead we go right into a story where Max helps Furiosa save a group of young women from a life of sex slavery and he ends up being secondary to the main story.
That said, I loved the film.
Tom Hardy was brilliant and I hope he gets to play Max again in a story which is a little more about Max himself.
The stunt work on this film was astounding!
If it doesn’t win an oscar there’s something wrong.
This film went back to filming with actual stunts and real vehicles and there is very little green screen involved.
There are some truly gut wrenching stunts that take place and I take my hat off to the men and women who did them.
All in all it was a good try.
If you liked the original Mad Max 2, then you’ll love this one.
I just hope they don’t go the way of ‘Beyond Thunderdome’ for the next one!
